Obama: Trump is 'petty' and should be challenged

US President Barack Obama speaks during a news conference at the Landmark Mekong Riverside Hotel in Vientiane, Laos, Thursday, September 8, 2016, after attending the ASEAN Summit.

"I don't think the guy's qualified to be president of the United States", said the president, speaking at a press conference in Laos on Thursday after the second of two Asian summits.

On Monday, hours before arriving in Laos, Duterte told Philippine reporters he wouldn't accept questions from Obama about extrajudicial killings that have occurred during his crackdown on suspected drug dealers and users. "I never made that statement, check it out".

Duterte's spokesperson said he could not confirm or deny those reports, but added: "It is a family matter".

"Mr. Obama must have found out for himself how amiable President Duterte is, one thing that I've known personally for many years in Davao City", Teo said. Mr. Obama had cancelled a meeting with Mr. Duterte scheduled for Tuesday because of the outburst.

"I am a president of a sovereign state and we have long ceased to be a colony", he said.

Obama is wrapping up a meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Laos.

At the end of a six-day trip that saw a dispute over airplane stairs escalate into a foreign policy metaphor and an expletive-laden rant from a U.S. ally prompt questions about a key regional partner, the challenge of asserting American influence in Asia seemed in sharper relief than ever.

Implied was that few in Asia can imagine either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton maintaining the same level of commitment to the region as Obama. Obama has endorsed Hillary Clinton and has said he plans to campaign full-force for the Democrat before the November 8 election.

"I realize this raises tensions", Obama said earlier as he met with ASEAN leader, referring to a recent global arbitration ruling against China on the maritime dispute. That deal awaits ratification in the U.S. Congress, where there is opposition from both parties.

"Laos PM said his country supported India as a permanent member of a reformed and expanded UNSC", External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup informed the media after a bilateral meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sisoulith on Thursday morning.

"His words of appreciation and praise were included in his review and he also thanked Malaysia.for our contribution to curb IS (Daish) propaganda", he told the Malaysian press on the last day of the 28th and 29th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits.
