National Museum Of African American History And Culture Set To Open

As a lawyer in the late 1990s, Wilkins also launched a non-profit organization to study the creation of a national museum dedicated to African-American history and culture.

The first national museum devoted exclusively to the history and culture of African-Americans is now open.

The museum "fulfills an urgent need" to explain "the complex stories, achievements, and almost impossible perseverance that black Americans continue to embody", said Thomas DeFrantz, African American Studies professor at Duke University. She also talks with religious leaders about the impact they hope the new museum will have.

Now a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, Wilkins served as the chairman of a committee of the presidential commission that selected the location and won Congressional authorization for the museum.

A separate section examines the Civil Rights Movement, the Black Power era of the 1960s and 1970s and other activism remembering many activists, including Lewis and Dr. Martin Luther King. Serving as home to more than 36,000 artifacts, the museum exists to both memorialize and educate, sharing the "unvarnished truth" of America's past and celebrating the triumphs of its present. President Obama gave Donald Trump a history lesson on Friday by encouraging him to visit the (NMAAHC). "They started this in 1970, trying to get something that represents the history of the African-American for the greater United States and our young people to understand the impact the African-American culture has on the building of the country".

"A clear-eyed view of history can make us uncomfortable, but it is precisely because of this discomfort that we grow", Obama said.

Bush said a great nation does not hide from its history, "it faces its flaws and corrects them".

Colts' quarterback Andrew Luck back at practice
Luck told reporters he's sore from last week's game in Denver but expects to play Sunday when the 0-2 Colts host the Chargers. He said he anticipates practicing Thursday but will defer to the training staff and coaches to make the final decision.

"We are very excited to see our family history", said Gladys Atkins, from Helmetta, N.J."We of course descended from slaves. Black and white and Latino and Native American and Asian American - see how our stories are bound together", he said standing on a stage outside the bronze-colored, latticed museum. Jesse J. Holland covers race and ethnicity for The Associated Press and is the author of "The Invisibles: The Untold Story of African American Slaves in the White House". "White Americans are much more African-American than most will admit".

"It makes a counterpoint and suggests that there is no single way to be African-American in this country", said exhibit curator William Pretzer.

One of those who have worked for years to see this museum come to life is educator and historian Lonnie Bunch, founding director for the museum.

The most important thing about the new museum that opens Saturday in this city is not its bold architecture or the quality of its visual and aural exhibits or even the lessons it might seek to convey now and in coming years.

The opening ceremony featured rousing musical tributes including Howard University's "Showtime" marching band, the Roots, and an a capella presentation by a choir from D.C.'s Duke Ellington School for the Arts.

In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a white police officer has been charged with manslaughter for fatally shooting Terence Crutcher, 40, whose auto had broken down and blocked a road.

Ground was broken for the new museum in 2012.
