Brad Marchand signs 8-year extension with Bruins

Brad Marchand celebrates his second of two goals against Russia on Sept. 24

After scoring two goals against Russian Federation in Canada's win on Saturday, there was speculation that Marchand would ditch the Bruins to play with Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins after this year.

While the massive leap in production - and going from consecutive seasons of 25 and 24 goals to netting 37 tallies is a significant jump - could cause some to think that Marchand might have caught lightning in a bottle, his play at the World Cup certainly doesn't lend any credibility to that belief.

The pesky winger was set to be an unrestricted free agent after the upcoming National Hockey League season but has made a decision to stick with Boston.

It looks like Brad Marchand isn't leaving Boston any time soon. He is coming off the best season of his career, a campaign in which he scored a team-leading 37 goals.

And Monday, just two days later, it appears the Bruins have avoided allowing that Marchand-Crosby-Penguins scenario to happen. Truth be told though, his effectiveness in getting under opponents skin is nearly worth the $6 million alone.

Roman Abramovich already holds crisis talks regarding Antonio Conte following Liverpool defeat
" Lots of things that could happen, and so we have got to keep going, stick together and focus on the next games ahead [of us ]". Jordan Henderson certainly silenced his critics with an absolute screamer to take the score to 2-0 in the 36th minute.

His goal total for the season was the most by a Bruin since the 2002-2003 season when Bridgewater's Glen Murray notched 44 goals. He was also selected to receive the honor of a Top 3 Player on the Team recognition for his efforts.

Marchand is now skating with Team Canada at the World Cup of Hockey, where he's been playing alongside Bruins teammate Patrice Bergeron and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby.

Goaltender Tuukka Rask and centers David Krejci and newly signed David Backes are under contract through 2020-21 and center Patrice Bergeron's deal runs through 2022.

That will make Marchand, 28, a financially comfortable young man, to be sure, but he could have very well gotten a little bit more on the open market. On that front, this is a solid deal for the Bruins that should prove especially fruitful in the short term.
