SC Gov. Nikki Haley's confirmation hearing to become United Nations ambassador

Haley, the governor of SC, told the committee that what Trump says after he's sworn and huddles with his national security team will be what matters.

Haley acknowledged that she is new to worldwide diplomacy.

Trump has disparaged the United Nations, calling it a "just a club for people to get together, talk and have a good time", and saying that while the body had "tremendous potential", that if it did not live up to that potential, "it's a waste of time and money".

In her opening remarks, Haley called her story an American story.

"She really put it at the forefront of her work", said Booker.

Contrasting with Tillerson, who in his own hearing before the same committee declined to characterize Russia's role in killing civilians in Syria's civil war, Haley said that Moscow had committed "war crimes" and agreed with one senator's description that a genocide had occurred there. "I think we always have to be cautious". But she acknowledged there are areas, such as counterterrorism, where the two countries can cooperate. "I don't think that we can trust them", Haley said.

Even as she was speaking, Israel reacted positively to Haley's testimony.

Haley also said that both she and the administration opposed a Muslim registry, or "any registry based on religion". "I just think it needs to be done responsibly, knowing that we have a measurables on what we're looking for, where the end goal is, and knowing where exactly the start and stop is", she said.

Committee chairman Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said the committee would vote Monday on Haley's confirmation. As Tillerson did, Haley is also likely to face questions about Trump's financial and business relationships overseas and potential conflicts of interest.

Haley said there is a need to review all of the operations, adding in some cases the United Nations peacekeeping missions are not getting cooperation from their own governments.

Haley was just the latest of his nominees to publicly break from the president-elect on Russia: Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson did, and so did Defense Secretary nominee General James Mattis and the nominee for Central Intelligence Agency director, Rep. Mike Pompeo.

HALEY: What I'll tell you is Russian Federation is trying to show their muscle right now.

President-elect Donald Trump's pick for UN ambassador blasted the Obama administration for not blocking a UN Security Council resolution that condemned Israeli settlements as illegal and backed moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem, while explicitly stating she supported a two-state solution and recognizing settlements "can hinder peace". Haley also told Sen.

And asked about the extrajudicial killings in the Philippines' war on drugs, Haley said the practice violates basic human rights. As she ran for governor in 2010, Republican state Sen. "We have to continue to be very strong back and show them what this new administration is going to be".

She made it clear she did not support a registry of United States citizens based on religion despite President-elect Donald Trump's campaign pledge to create a registry of Muslims."This administration and I do not believe there should be any registry based on religion", Haley said. "For the insert itself I believe is wrong", she added.

Haley asked, "Are we getting what we pay for?" as she noted that the United States provides 22 percent of the UN budget, far more than any other country.

But she did say the US should work with Russian Federation to deal with ISIS.

The South Carolina-born daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley at 38 became the nation's youngest governor in January 2011 and was easily re-elected in 2014.

"I will bring a firm message to the United Nations that US leadership is essential in the world".

She added, "What we do need to do is know which countries are a threat and those are the ones we need to watch and be careful and vet".
