Townships Declare Snow Emergencies Ahead of Storm

ABC News

On Long Island, the National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for Suffolk County, saying it could get from 10 to 14 inches of snow.

The storm comes a day after much of the Northeast enjoyed a brief glimpse of spring, with temperatures hitting 60 degrees in some places.

Authorities say almost 1,700 flights have been canceled at New York City's three major airports because of the powerful winter storm hitting the region.

In addition, Delta Airlines announced that it was canceling its morning flights to JFK and LaGuardia airports in New York City on Thursday, said NFTA spokesman C. Douglas Hartmayer.

Public schools in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia will be closed on Thursday as the Northeast prepares for a snowstorm that may blanket parts of those areas.

Earlier, meteorologists forecast up to 12 inches of snow and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office said wind gusts approaching 35 miles per hour are possible.

NWS warns that heavy snow can make travel risky, and advises that if you must travel, you should keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

NY isn't the only city paying through the nose when it snows.

Near whiteout conditions are predicted for some areas, and at the height of the storm, snow could fall at a rate of two to four inches per hour.

Schools throughout the region planned to close for the day, including those in New York, Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. The storm raced in over New Jersey and rapidly approached downtown Manhattan by the predawn hours, with meteorologists expecting at least 8 inches across the Big Apple.
