Protesters block Betsy DeVos from entering public school in Washington

Protesters physically blocked Education Secretary Betsy De Vos from entering a public school on Friday Feb 10 2017 morning as she arrived at Jefferson Middle School Academy in southwest Washington not far from the Department of Education building.

She doesn't believe public schools and charter schools should have equal accountability.

Devos arrived at Jefferson Middle School Academy where she was greeted by demonstrators who kept her from entering the school.

Michael Bennet, a Democrat, voted against DeVos' confirmation. But that didn't stop her from sending out an ill-advised "What, me? You should be so proud of yourself".

"Partnering with students, parents, educators, state and local leaders, Congress and all stakeholders, we will improve education options and outcomes across America", she said.

Public schools are now underfunded and teachers are paid little to teach overcrowded classrooms.

Patriots Storm Back to Stun Falcons in Super Bowl
Even on the slow days leading up to the Super Bowl, controversy creates press and press keeps the game in front of the public. To win five of seven Super Bowls is incredible enough, but to do them all with late-game heroics takes it to another level.

That's why the fierce opposition marshaled against DeVos only signals that she, unlike many of her critics, is serious about improving educational opportunity for all children and not merely paying that idea lip service. Her opponents, including many teachers, deluged congressional phone lines to implore their senators to vote against her. A video shows protesters blocking DeVos and her security detail as they shouted, "You do not represent anything that we stand for", and, "Shame, shame, shame". It is no surprise to public school advocates and supporters that DPCC leadership wants to blow up the Buffalo School District in favor of for-profit charter schools. They cited her financial interest in organizations pushing for charter schools, though she has said she will divest those interests.

Public schools are "the foundation of our society, that's how everybody learns what's right and wrong", Schwartz said.

This may be the "new normal" under the Trump administration.

DeVos' visit was publicized by Washington Teachers' Union president Elizabeth Davis yesterday, who urged protesters to meet DeVos at the school. In the front of the school, a larger group of protesters also chanted and surrounded government vehicles, according to videos posted on Twitter. Lamar Alexander, the chairman of the Education Committee. In communities across the country, and particularly in small, rural communities like the 90-person town where I grew up, public schools and hardworking teachers who inspire students are vital. Like her predecessors, DeVos will be limited in her ability to push her agenda. WJLA's footage of the encounter showed the protesters using their bodies to block Mrs. DeVos from walking up the ramp to the door.
