A fast-moving snowstorm barreled through the northeastern United States on Thursday, stretching from Pennsylvania to ME and threatening to drop a foot (30 cm) or more of snow on major cities including New York, Boston and Hartford, Connecticut.

A day after a blizzard dropped more than 10 inches of snow on the city, the mayor Friday said he would allow 48 hours for the local tradition of using makeshift space savers to reserve on-street parking spots in some neighborhoods.

Winds on Monday could snap power lines and tree branches which could lead to power outages.

Samhuel said the temperature in Boston is now 20 degrees and it will be dipping into the teens very shortly, dropping into single digits by early evening. "By the time the snow comes to an end we could see about 4-8" in the lower Pioneer Valley with 8-12" in the higher elevations of Berkshire county, along the east slopes of the Berkshires and into Berkshire county.

More than 3,500 flights scheduled for Thursday have been canceled, according to FlightAware.com, which tracks cancellations and delays; as many as 150 have already been canceled for Friday. Another inch or two of snow could fall through the day, particularly after 1 p.m. There will be many impacts on Southern New England with this complex and powerful storm system. Much of Rhode Island and CT are also expected to see wintery conditions as well.

By Sunday snow is likely from the Great Lakes into upstate NY and much of New England, before heavy snow and wind gusts over 50 miles per hour hit New England on Monday. Closer to the coast, it will start as a wetter, heavier snow, but become lighter during the second half of the storm, as colder air moves in.

Public transportation service was being reduced and the morning and evening commutes were expected to be severely affected before the storm was forecast to taper off by Thursday evening.

We'll be along with updates, new information and conditions throughout the day.
