President Trump Is Angry About Leaks That Led to Michael Flynn's Resignation

The Justice Department warned the White House weeks ago that national security adviser Michael Flynn could be vulnerable to blackmail for contacts with Russian officials before President Donald Trump took power, a US official said on Monday.

Flynn handed in his resignation late Monday after admitting he provided "incomplete information" about whether he had discussed U.S. sanctions on Russian Federation with the ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak prior to Trump taking office.

The press secretary's remarks represented a stark departure from an assertion Monday from Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway, who told MSNBC Flynn still had the president's "full confidence".

The Justice Department warned the White House that Mr. Flynn could be in a compromised position as a result of the contradictions between the public depictions of the calls and what intelligence officials knew to be true based on recordings of the conversations.

"Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with the incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador". Spicer said it was an "evolving and eroding process" and that the president made a decision late in the day to ask for Flynn's resignation. She is seen here arriving at the White House on January 27.

Under US law it is illegal for private citizens - which Flynn was at the time - to carry out diplomatic relations. When Trump said, "I don't know about that", he simply meant he didn't know about the Washington Post report specifically, Spicer claimed.

Flynn's controversial phone call following reports of close Russian ties continues to tarnish the controversy-prone Trump administration.

After months of a slow simmer, Washington roiled Tuesday over the circumstances surrounding President Donald Trump's administration and Russian leaders.

After the messy and high-profile resignation of Michael Flynn, the president and at least one key congressional Republican have directed their ire at the leaks that exposed the now-former National Security Advisor's clandestine conversations with Russian officials.

"I don't know about that". In the hours after Flynn left, senior lawmakers said that it was Flynn who might get called to testify before intelligence panels about his Russian Federation contacts.

Since the conversation took place late December before Trump assumed office, Flynn was not yet an authorized government official.

Continuing to go after leakers, Flynn said: 'People who are entrusted with national security secrets, classified information, are leaking it out.

Other candidates believed to be under consideration for the job are former Central Intelligence Agency director and retired four-star Gen. David Petraeus and Keith Kellogg, a retired lieutenant general who was named the acting national security adviser after Flynn's resignation.
