The senior budget official said there will be a large reduction in foreign aid and that most domestic agencies will have to absorb cuts. For example, the president spoke regularly about spending more money on taking care of veterans, more money on immigration enforcement.

That could put Washington at odds with Iran and China.

On Monday, the White House said it would request $54 billion more in military spending for next year.

He said too much money is now being spent on individual military equipment and he will look to change that.

U.S. President Donald Trump called Monday for a $54 billion annual increase in defense spending, describing the 10 percent jump as a "landmark event", a message aimed at assuring the world of "American strength, security and resolve". During a Friday address to the Conservative Political Action Committee, Trump said reporters "shouldn't be allowed to use sources unless they use somebody's name". You'll see increases there and decreases in other areas. Why? Its 2016 budget was more than $600 billion.

Reports emerged Tuesday that the proposal calls for a 37 percent cut in State Department and USAID budgets and that development assistance would take the biggest hit, according to officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press.

The EPA did not respond to TheDCNF by the time of publication.

An official from the Office of Management and Budget told reporters that it included an nearly 10 per cent increase on the $600 billion defence budget. The White House will be sending Trump's proposal out today to federal departments as he prepared to face off with Congress over budget negotiations. "We're going to get numbers way up, and we're going to get jobs back in our country", he said. In particular, to approve Trump's desired increase in military outlays, Congress would need to lift the cap on defense spending that was part of sequestration in the 2013 budget deal.

US President Donald Trump proposes a budget that will boost spending on defence and infrastructure.

The U.S. government already spends $600 billion dollars a year on its military - more money than the next seven biggest spenders combined, including China and Russian Federation. The New York Times also has been the subject of a litany of negative recent tweets from the president. The same official also claimed Trump wanted to make "a more robust presence in key worldwide waterways and chokepoints".

A second official said the State Department's budget could be cut by as much as 30 percent, which would force a major restructuring of the department and elimination of programs.

The Trump administration has said the budget figures sent to agency heads is not the full budget.
