NCAA Tournament: Oregon Ducks Outshoot Kansas, Land In Final Four

OR will beat Kansas in the Elite Eight on Saturday.

Much didn't change early on in the second half as the Ducks flew out to an 18-point cushion.

Brionna Jones, a 6-foot-3 senior center, had 16 points and 15 rebounds, finishing the season with 25 double-doubles for Maryland (32-3).

But the Ducks outscored Kansas 17-7 the rest of the half, including an 8-0 run to close the half, that featured a banked-in 3-pointer from Tyler Dorsey (27 points on 9-of-13 shooting) at the halftime buzzer that gave OR a 44-33 lead at the break.

The Boilermakers, meanwhile, shot only 31 percent from the field and turned the ball over seven times in the second half. OR managed a second straight major upset after knocking off second-seeded Duke 74-65 in the previous round.

Slaughter had a career-high nine steals, a school record in the NCAA tournament.

A wounded OR team waltzed into Kansas City, barely beat a 7-seed in the Sweet 16, then absolutely pummeled the Jayhawks.

Dorsey finished the game with 20 points, including a game-best 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. They'd been on a 7-2 run until Bell's block, and OR only led 14-12 with 10:46 to go in the first half.

OR had to work for every point, attempting only three free throws in the first 37 minutes, but the Ducks allowed Kansas to claw back when it began draining as much time as possible, with too much remaining on the clock.

Like the Ducks, Kansas was in this spot a season ago, falling short in the Elite 8. The Oregon junior might not be the biggest name in the tournament, but no player (with the possible exception of Kentucky's De'Aaron Fox) has been more important to his team's success.

The Netherlands squandered its chance when Curt Smith grounded into an inning-ending double play. "Yadier Molina came to play". He managed to limit the damage after the first and throw four and two thirds before reaching his pitch limit.

"I think you see the other team's best shots", Burkdoll said.

For Kansas, Frank Mason III scored 21 points.

With two minutes left, Derrick Walton Jr. hit a layup to give MI a 68-65 lead, prompting an OR timeout.

First it was freshman Josh Jackson facing his buddies and hometown team in Michigan State.

Maryland slashed the margin to three points on a Slocum layup early in the third, but OR responded and brought the lead all the way up to 14.

"You've got to give them credit", Graham said.

OR was able to frustrate Maryland's Brionna Jones and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough for much of the game.

"We just buckled down on defense, and we got back in transition and tried to stop their easy transition buckets", Ionescu said.

UCLA coach Cori Close, although bitterly disappointed with the end of her season, expressed happiness that OR will represent the Pac-12 in the regional final. Dylan Ennis, a senior guard for the Ducks, is averaging 10.7 points per game and 4.4 rebounds per game. Gonzaga has already punched its ticket to the Final Four, and now OR joins them. And at least a couple of other Jayhawks figure to spend at least some time mulling over their future plans. The Bulldogs scored the game's final six points to earn a hard-fought 61-58 win over fourth-seeded West Virginia in the West Regional semifinals.
