April Begins With Threat of Severe Thunderstorms Across the South

The storms struck Texas and Oklahoma bringing tornadoes, tennis ball-sized hail and powerful winds, but no widespread damage was reported. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is expected Wednesday evening into early Thursday, and some of these storms could be locally severe as well. All types of severe weather are possible: damaging winds, tornadoes, large hail and heavy rain capable of flooding. The overall severe threat is going to be dependent on a few variables, but is generally on the lower end to middle of the road. This will likely begin as a line of individual storms developing along and east of the Mississippi River and intensifying as they move east.

Your weekend will start off pleasant and on a dry note.

The storms over South Alabama have clearly disrupted the southerly flow over parts of the state, lessening the overall severe weather threat this evening for the northern half of the state. Highs will get near 70 degrees with a wind shifting from the east to the south and gusting to 25 miles per hour at times.

Women's college basketball gameday: No. 7 Mississippi State vs. No. 1 UConn
Gordon said. "It's an opportunity that not a lot of people get to partake in and for me it was just like a no-brainer, honestly". There may not be a team anywhere that can play passing lanes as well as UConn ... well, maybe except Mississippi State itself.

There is the potential for damaging wind gusts, large hail and isolated tornadoes. Just below that, we have that same model's prediction of more likely ingredients for tornadoes. To put it in simple terms, all of the ingredients are there for, at the very least, a severe weather threat, and possibly a significant one. Much of this drought area should see another inch or more of rain through early next week.

Anyone traveling across these areas on Friday will need to be on alert for rapidly changing weather conditions and heed all watches and warnings. Monday, those on vacation along he Gulf from New Orleans thru Gulf Shores AL to Panama City will have to watch for severe storms.
