How the US-China Relationship Has Changed Over the Years

Xi and Trump are scheduled to have a series of meetings later in the day at the US President's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, which is now being called the Southern White House.

Investors are also cautious ahead of the meeting, starting Thursday, between President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

Now, as President Donald Trump prepares to host his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, at Mar-a-Lago in Florida, a reversal of sorts has emerged: It's the US leader who is seen as an unpredictable wild card and a skeptic of free-trade deals - and it's China that is casting itself as a champion of rules-based global trade.

Mar-a-Lago, the site of his summit with Xi, is located in one of the most vulnerable regions in the United States to sea level rise.

Xi has bones to pick with Trump, too. "The timing they pick often has an in-your-face quality", he said of the North Koreans, adding that the launch sends the message "we're here, we're not going away, you can't ignore us'". In using such language, Tillerson adopted wholesale the Chinese definition of U.S. Bannon, the White House chief strategist, was quoted as saying past year that the USA would certainly go to war with China over the South China Sea within a decade.

They were expected to get into more detailed discussions about trade and foreign policy issues on Friday, concluding their summit with a working lunch.

Progress with China has slowed recently, and the Trump administration wants to make the relationship more "fair, balanced and based on the principle of reciprocity", the official said. "Ninety percent of North Korea's external trade is with China".

US Federal Reserve's March minutes on Wednesday showed most policymakers think the central bank should take steps to begin trimming its $4.5 trillion balance sheet later this year as long as the economic data holds up.

"We give state dinners to the heads of China".

Fifth Inning Sinks Pittsburgh Pirates On Opening Day
Stephen Strasburg (1-0) earned the victory, allowing 2 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings, pitching out of the stretch the whole way. David Ortiz may be gone and David Price is starting on this disabled list, but this team is bringing serious talent.

In other words, Trump's plan for his first meeting with the leader of the world's second-greatest power sounds like the first line of a bad joke: The president's son-in-law, a Texas oil guy, and a 93-year-old man walk into a meeting with the Chinese president.

The Security Council on Thursday strongly condemned North Korea's latest ballistic missile launch and demanded a halt to all missile tests, stressing again that they violate United Nations sanctions and "are significantly increasing tension in the region and beyond".

North Korea is working to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of hitting the United States.

Neal, the top Democrat on the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, joined panel Chairman Kevin Brady, in penning a letter to Trump, which raised concerns about Chinese-imposed trade barriers that they argued "significantly reduce American businesses' abilities to export to and invest in China and elsewhere". Beijing says its influence is limited and that it is doing all it can.

Swift, in Tokyo to meet senior Japanese Self Defense Force commanders, said at a briefing that any decision on a pre-emptive attack would be up to Trump.

Analysts believe any military action would likely provoke severe North Korean retaliation and massive casualties in South Korea and Japan and among U.S. troops stationed there.

"The Trump Xi meeting is in focus and we don't expect any material changes, other than tough talk and a good talking point for tomorrow's newspaper headlines", Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at First Standard Financial wrote in a note.

The Chinese leader can already claim important wins: Following Mr. Trump's inauguration on January 20, Mr. Xi refused to speak with the new American president by phone until he agreed to affirm the One China policy.
