Trump boosts coal as China takes the lead on climate change

U.S. State of Secretary Rex Tillerson left shakes hands with China's President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing China

Stocks slipped in Asia Thursday ahead of a potentially fraught first meeting between US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping.

The US is building a "global coalition" to subdue North Korea, a US Department of State official said today, following the latest missile test by China's neighbour and traditional ally. North Korea had previously been suspected by researchers of being behind several major thefts, including one a year ago in which up to $81 million was stolen from Bangladesh's central bank account in NY, as well as other attempted heists in Ecuador, the Philippines and Vietnam.

The summit is being closely monitored in both countries after a bumpy start to perhaps the most important bilateral relationship in the world, which will be critical in confronting North Korea's threats.

North Korea initiated a missile test this week aimed at Japanese waters, but the test reportedly failed.

Meanwhile, Trump has to manage the appearance of having a coherent China policy and relationship with the country that shows concrete results, even as his bluster is put to the test on the worldwide stage.

Asked if Taiwan was up for negotiation, Thornton said Wednesday: "We have basically moved on from there".

Their summit brings together two leaders who could not seem more different: the often stormy Trump, prone to angry tweets, and Xi, outwardly calm, measured and tightly scripted, with no known social media presence.

Ahead of the critical showdown, President Trump vowed to deliver an ultimatum to his Chinese counterpart, saying if China didn't act on North Korea, "we will".

Whatever dealings go down between Xi and Trump at Mar-a-Lago, they'll have to happen somewhere else.

"These are very concerning moments to me because we're not sure, every time they launch we're not sure if this is a threat missile or not", Hyten said.

One area where China could hurt North Korea is in its procurement of materials for its weapons program.

Can Gonzaga neutralize UNC's advantage inside? Hard to game-out a scenario in which it won't be in doubt in the final minutes. Foul trouble was the story of the second half as both teams got into the double-bonus with 12 minutes left in the game.

"My guess is that this issue will not come up at this meeting, and I think that is a lost opportunity if it's not raised", Barbara Finamore, founder of the Natural Resources Defence Council's China progamme, told The Independent.

"The question of hard outcomes. the spirit of this summit is for the two to develop a relationship - to really establish a relationship - and to lay out the key concerns that each side has about the relationship", he said. And Trump's beef with Xi is the direction most of it goes - more from the U.S. to China than the other way around.

If North Korea uses its nuclear weapons, it faces retaliation in kind. He's played more than a dozen times since taking office. But Trump would be wise to calibrate his approach to be collaborative, not confrontational.

Trump has delighted in warmly welcoming his guests on his frequent visits to what he calls the "winter White House", shaking hands with them as they enter and doing the rounds of each table at formal daily dinners. But it also exposed gaps in US intelligence.

Either way, the talks between the two giants, which account for 40 per cent of global trade, are being closely watched.

"If we are serious about solving this issue, we need to tackle the root of it", she said at a regular news briefing.

Senior Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y., are pressing Trump to let Xi know he intends to live up to his bold campaign promises.

President Xi is expected to present Mr Trump with a multi-billion dollar package for Chinese investment in the US to placate the nationalist US President who has assailed China for stealing American jobs and manufacturing plants.

"It just hasn't shown any ability to break the 200-day moving average and clearly shows that the price action is not being driven in isolation but has been driven by the USA dollar", said Jeffrey Halley, senior market analyst at OANDA.
