Minnesota leaders call on Trump to consult Congress on Syria

Thursday night's strikes - some 60 cruise missiles fired from two ships in the Mediterranean - were the culmination of a rapid, three-day transformation for Trump, who has long opposed deeper United States involvement in Syria's civil war.

It was the ghastly images of men and women gasping for breath, small children foaming at the mouth and in agony, which President Donald Trump saw two days before he OK the launch of missile on attack Syria.

Fifty-nine Tomahawk missiles each struck a target on the airfield, they said. The civil war roiling Syria has been ongoing for six years.

The chemical attack prompted the U.S.to launch almost 60 Tomahawk missiles on a Syrian air base early Friday, which killed nine people and marked the first time Washington has directly targeted Syrian government forces since the war began in 2011.

JUDY WOODRUFF: We will get a deeper assessment of the USA strike, and its implications, right after the news summary.

"I hope they can find a way to remove Assad without bombs, without more war", Zarour said.

She says that for this to be helpful, it needs to be part of a full USA strategy toward Syria, not just a one-time event. It has condemned the USA missile attack as an "act of aggression". The Syrian government blames rebel fighters. That order has now also been blocked in court. The United States should ensure the destruction of these weapons and the airfields that could launch attacks using them.

Australia: Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told reporters that his government "strongly supports the swift and just response of the United States", and he described the action as " a calibrated, proportionate and targeted response". He said that for that "this oppressive Assad needs to go".

"He had a lot of questions and said he wanted to think about it, but he also had some points he wanted to make".

The U.S. military action is believed to have destroyed approximately 20 aircraft, the officials said. Both Russia and China blocked a similar resolution in February.

The Syrian army said the USA attack killed six people and called it "blatant aggression" that made the United States a partner of "terrorist groups" including ISIS.

Stephen Strasburg (1-0) earned the victory, allowing 2 runs and 6 hits in 7 innings, pitching out of the stretch the whole way. David Ortiz may be gone and David Price is starting on this disabled list, but this team is bringing serious talent.

Administration officials are signaling that the missile strike was a one-time response to the gas attack that killed dozens of civilians, including children.

Hussein said the imam's sermon focused more on the importance of education than on the US attack, and urged parents to home-school their children on the many days when airstrikes make going to class impossible, to prevent an ignorant next generation. About 1,140 have arrived since 2014.

The civil war between government forces and opponents to Assad's regime began in 2011. The U.S.is uncertain whether it was Syrian or Russian.

A statement from the International Refugee Assistance Project following the missile strikes took a similar tone.

The country's Defence Ministry said that Syrian air defences would be beefed up following the USA strikes, with Russian news agencies reporting that the ministry had also mocked the effectiveness of the strikes as "extremely low" claiming that only 23 of the missiles had hit their target.

American leaders have been noncommittal about their stances on Assad, he said.

"Clearly there's been a complete change of philosophy in this administration in a one week period", Markey said.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged restraint and a renewed push for peace in Syria, saying "there is no other way to solve the conflict than through a political solution".

"We don't want this kind of resolution", he said.

Dib doesn't think that Trump actually cares about Syrians. Trump has attempted to restrict the entry of Syrian refugees, as well as people from several other Muslim-majority countries, into the USA, but courts have blocked his executive orders. Dib said. "This American action, it's a message, but not for Assad". Trump sent a message, 'I am here.
