Spieth goes on 3rd-round charge at Masters

AUGUSTA, Georgia Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia led the U.S. Masters on six under par and Jordan Spieth was lurking two shots back after an absorbing third round at a sun-drenched Augusta National on Saturday.

England's Lee Westwood, runner-up past year, shot 68 to finish at one under along with Belgian Thomas Pieters, the joint overnight leader who struggled to a scrappy 75. But he's still tied for the lead.

William McGirt started the day four shots behind Hoffman and offset two bogeys with a pair of birdies before dropping another shot at the 18th to slip to two under.

In a tie for 45th, Day was joined by fellow Australian and amateur world No.1 Curtis Luck after the Perth 20-year-old showed great fighting spirit with a gutsy even-par 72.

Meanwhile, Rickie Fowler, fresh off of a top three performance at the Shell Houston Open, started his second round off going par-eagle-birdie and made another birdie on the eighth hole to get to three-under, just one back of Garcia and Hoffman. Pieters and Fowler are in their 20s and Garcia is in his 30s while Hoffman is in his 40s.

Mickelson got within one of the lead when he reached 3 under after a birdie at 10 and again after another at 13. Garcia is 11th, Pieters is 35th and Hoffman is 52nd.

Through two rounds, the first hole has surrendered just three birdies. He birdied the par-5 13th and parred his way in.

Tillerson's terse words seen as tactical change over NKorea
Most North Korean missiles use liquid propellant, which generally must be added to the missile on the launch pad before firing. North Korea may be raised as an issue, but I would be very surprised to see any significant breakthroughs on that front.

He said closing out a four-shout lead to win the US PGA Tour's Honda Classic in February has him in good stead for a Masters charge.

Phil Mickelson, seeking to become the oldest Masters champion, opened his round with consecutive birdies, but stumbled to a front-nine three-over that crippled his bid for a fourth green jacket.

Garcia intends to take a better frame of mind into this weekend than his defeated statement reflected five years ago. You have to realise those things are going to happen and if you manage to do that you can come out here and compete. "And then hit two really good shots on the next, nearly made eagle".

"I was very patient today after the bogey on one".

The last time there was a four-way tie for the lead at the halfway point of the Masters was in 1973, when Bob Dickson, Gay Brewer, J.C. Snead and Tommy Aaron were tied at 3-under 141.

"My coach (Pete Cowen) has told me to please have a lot of patience this week so I'm trying my hardest", he said. But at the same time, it's Friday afternoon. He is now at 2-over and closing in on the quartet of leaders — Charley Hoffman, Sergio Garcia, Rickie Fowler and Thomas Pieters.
