White House, lawmakers adrift over reviving health bill

Virtually every congressional Republican won election promising to repeal ObamaCare.

The White House and House Republicans appear short of a last-ditch deal on their long-promised repeal of Barack Obama's health care law. "(But) the sooner it gets done, the happier I'll be". Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., the caucus leader, said talks were boiling down to curbing several of the current law's coverage requirements - a sharp contrast to the full repeal of the statute that many initially demanded.

As talks break down over the Republican legislative bid to repeal and replace Obamacare, one GOP House lawmaker laid out a frank and brutal assessment of his own party. Each is from a state that expanded Medicaid under Obamacare.

A number of Conservative Republicans have opposed the ACHA because they believe it does not go far enough toward repealing Obamacare.

The bill had been approved by four committees prior to reaching the floor.

Some Republicans have also been rubbed the wrong way by the finger-pointing itself and and comments that have been made in the media. The Affordable Care Act mandates that insurers provide coverage regardless of a person's medical history. Gallup says a majority of Americans support the law - a first since the company started asking about it in 2012. The GOP legislation replacing it would scale back the federal role in health care, covering 24 million fewer people over time while cutting taxes for upper-income earners.

Trump initially said he would move on to fulfilling other campaign promises such as a tax overhaul and infrastructure-spending package, but a new attempt at reviving the failed healthcare push took off on Monday when White House officials met Republican lawmakers.

Chris Collins, a moderate Trump ally from NY, said resignedly that the ball was in the court of the Freedom Caucus, The Guardian reports.

"What are they going to tell their constituents in six months or next year?" "They can try like heck to point fingers any which way they can". Conservatives complained the moderates were not eager to allow states to opt out of two popular ACA provisions: One would require all plans to cover 10 "essential health benefits" and another would bar insurers from charging sick people more for coverage than healthy people.

"The majority of the Freedom Caucus would be favorably inclined to vote for that", Meadows said, adding: "We've got to act to lower premiums".

Arrington said his ideology is more aligned with the Freedom Caucus, but understands a ideal bill won't get passed through the budget reconciliation process.

But the bipartisan atmosphere was jarred by the release of a letter from committee Republicans to President Donald Trump, calling for the removal of John Koskinen as Internal Revenue Service commissioner.

Rep. David Schweikert, R-Ariz., a sponsor of the amendment, said it was aimed at containing premiums by providing an additional $15 billion over a decade to help insurers cover the costs of seriously ill people.

Beyond those measures are a handful of others, including a routine NASA authorization bill and legislation to make permanent a program that encourages private sector technology experts to temporarily join federal agencies to lend their expertise.

He said the GOP proposal would be less expensive than traditional high-risk pools because costs would be spread through the individual market. "There was a general agreement that the progress we're making is certainly progress, and there are good discussions, but understanding that there's a whole lot of things that we have to work out". "We'll get it done. We're going to be talking over recess".

"I've long believed we have to do very hard and challenging things to get this country back on track, and the process of doing this may not be popular at the moment", Ryan said in the interview.
