'Only time will tell' on improving US-China trade

North Korea: Friendship with Syria 'Will Be Strengthened and Developed'

On Friday, US missiles struck a Syrian airbase, killing at least six people.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged cooperation with the United States on trade, inviting President Donald Trump to visit China in a cordial start to their first meeting.

Earlier this year, China called on both North Korea and the U.S. to tone down tension on the Korean peninsula - North Korea by suspending its nuclear weapons programme and the USA by stopping military exercises with South Korea that inflame Pyongyang.

President Trump met with Chinese president Xi Jinping, and afterward said the two made "tremendous progress" and he thinks "lots of very potentially bad problems will be going away".

Beijing had hoped to use the two-day summit to burnish Xi's credentials as a powerful world leader who had successfully tamed the US's volatile commander-in-chief and Chinese propaganda chiefs battled to keep the spotlight on Mar-a-Lago despite the dramatic turn of events in the Middle East.

A spokesperson for the government also said the strike vindicated the country's decision to develop its own nuclear weapons programme.

During their talks over the two days, Xi and Trump exchanged views on key areas of bilateral cooperation as well as global and regional issues of common concern, it said.

China and the U.S. have agreed to cooperate in their efforts to confront North Korea over their nuclear program, according to a statement released by the White House.

China is North Korea's largest trade partner, and maintains diplomatic ties with the country - although these have become increasingly strained in recent years.

The Chinese have regularly joined Russia in vetoing action against Syria on the UN Security Council, of which Russia, China and the United States are permanent powers.

SHI: (Through interpreter) Western countries and the US have not done a good job with their own domestic economies and politics. Either way, the talks between the two giants, which account for 40 per cent of global trade, are being closely watched.

Trump and other administration officials have said all options are on the table, including military action.

Like most of the world, Pyongyang is still trying to figure out just what kind of a leader Trump will be.

The US missile strike on Syria contained a clear message for North Korea and its main ally China, analysts said, but not one strong enough to push Pyongyang off its nuclear weapons path.

However, after meetings on Thursday, Trump announced he had ordered missile strikes against Syria - placing Xi in a somewhat precarious position.

Washington's swift response overnight Thursday to Syria's alleged chemical weapons attack wasn't merely an impulsive response from a United States president known for his impulsive behavior, but also contained a message to his guest at the time - Chinese President Xi Jinping - analysts say. -South Korean war games, which are held annually and are now underway, have raised tensions on the Korean Peninsula to the brink of war.

The Korean Peninsula remains technically at war since the 1950-53 Korean conflict ended with an armistice, not a formal peace treaty.

Doing so - even with a one-off sort of airstrike - would be a far more risky move.

According to Blinken, negotiation is the only way to resolve the North Korean issue eventually and it should be done "when North Korea is prepared to engage in meaningful, authentic and credible discussions about denuclearization".

There was, however, no mention in the commentaries of the USA missile strike on a Syrian government airbase, which overshadowed the summit. "I can see why (Tillerson) he would rather focus on actions".
