'Girls' finale labors to find an ending

Five seasons ago

But between the general smugness and the treatment of characters of color on the show (and my fairly recent epiphany that every show that isn't Chewing Gum is plain trash), it's just not for me, despite everyone and their mothers insisting that this final season was "actually good". And while courtship of the under-30 set in NY is dominated by online dating and an allergy to long-term commitment, the relationships on "Girls" proceeded with nary a Tinder swipe - and not one, but two characters involved in quickie marriages. Her top choice: Go to law school, not because she cares about the law, but because she loves "all the rules" it entails. It's a reversal of the pilot's opening shot-Marnie is big spoon this time.

When the finale started Hannah and Marnie were cuddling in bed just like the first season. But it surprises Hannah when she wakes up - she wasn't expecting her. Marnie tells her she wants to stay and help her raise the baby.

Marnie is quite different from Rose, the pivotal character Williams plays in Peele's directorial debut, but there are a few striking similarities between the two. It's a fantastic coupling, Marnie and Hannah; they become this sexless couple raising a baby together. "I'm doing my best, I'm reading all the books, but honestly, it's too much - and you're not even acting that mature". She mentions immunity, a study about the cognitive benefits (some might counterpoint with this study from last month), and implores Hannah, who describes her nipples as "iguana skin" and isn't sure about pumping at work, to keep trying for Grover's sake. Marnie got the best line out of the moment, and one of the best lines of the episode: "Alright, Ghostbuster. But we're not massive regret people, are we, Jenni?" she continued. In many cases, there is literally no way to do it right, which is why even the most self-assured woman can fall victim to fears that she's somehow failing at being a mother.

Why He's Terrible: Hannah's ex-boyfriend-turned-gay-BFF-turned-roommate was the person she turned to for gossip and smack-talking, and his similar career paralysis didn't really provide motivation for either of them. Charlie is long gone. She's convinced her own baby hates her. Because he's a baby.

Over dinner, they watch a rerun of Full House, and Marnie tells Hannah she wants to go out Friday night and see a live jazz trio. In some ways, it's the ideal situation for Marnie. "Whether its creators want it to be or not, a series's last episode is a culmination".

The series concluded with Hannah singing Fast Car to her baby.

Thunder's Westbrook focused on playoffs, not historic season
All-in-all though, I'll take the shooting skills of Lou Williams, Eric Gordon and Ryan Anderson to take Houston in a barn-burner. The 2016-2017 National Basketball Association season was highlighted by the MVP debate, which many believe is a two-man race.

The strength of the friendships on Girls seemed to be measured on the individuals' willingness to show up for one another, repeatedly, in situations where their help often went unappreciated. It's how Hannah was as a baby.

Hannah has been particularly selfish throughout the run of "Girls," but everyone whose life has been changed by parenthood can relate to the difficulty of transitioning to the extreme sacrifice and selflessness it requires.

With Hannah gone, Marnie has awkward role-playing FaceTime sex with her personal trainer named Delvin P. Loreen walks in on her while she's "flicking the bean". Marnie responded, "You yelled at me for loving music". Marnie begins to sing in the auto. It's Hannah feeling that bond, those incredible oxytocin hormones flowing through her, giving her that boost she needs to know she can do it. Just like Hannah did when she was younger - and just like she has to do now. But Loreen, who knows what it's like to give your all to somebody who has another agenda, tells her prioritizing her own happiness could be the best thing for her and Hannah's friendship. In real life, Dunham is enthusiastically pro-abortion.

Loreen really comes in with the harsh truths in the finale. You've said that you knew immediately that you wanted to do the film. "Fucking everyone. For their whole lives". "We wanted the sense that there was a version which satisfied people who wanted the more traditional TV wrap-it-up conclusion", Dunham said.

After the eponymous group of friends - Hannah, Marnie, Soshanna and Jessa - chose to call their relationship quits in the penultimate episode that aired last week, the finale picked up months later after Hannah had given birth to her baby boy, Grover, and was living a quiet life as a single mother in upstate NY.
