It's not 'Earth Day' - it's 'Anti-Trump Day'

We understand that the most effective way to protect science is to encourage the public to value and engage with it.

The march, taking place in London, Washington D.C. and over 400 other cities on the 22 of April 2017, gives scientists the opportunity to demonstrate their passion for scientific research. I was supported in my research by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Also, they will demand that "billions not be spent on a wall, but on strengthening public schools to educate all our children regardless of immigration status", according to the American Federation of Teachers, one of the many unions supporting actions on that day.

Other scientists simply doubt that the protest movement will have a great impact in the United States.

For some, like Prof. "Ignoring scientific facts, theories and controversies is extraordinarily unsafe". There are 3 percent, about 1,500 climate scientists, who deny this. According to the Guardian, the march was originally organized on social media by Jonathan Berman, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas, after a Reddit conversation with other scientists about the effects of Donald Trump's policies on climate change and other issues.

"The march won't change the mind of the people, whose minds need to be changed", Robert Young, coastal scientist at Western Carolina University, said.

It would not remain without consequences if scientific evidence was disregarded in policy making, Weinberg believes.

We should also acknowledge that people's hesitation to accept scientific findings may come from not only lack of knowledge about the research, but from confusion about the level of uncertainty in science.

NBA Playoff Betting Preview: Warriors, Cavaliers lead way on odds
To finish with a better 3-year run in terms of overall win percentage, the Warriors need to go 16-4 or better this postseason. Los Angeles has won 18 of the past 20 meetings with Utah, according to the OddsShark NBA Database .

Under Trump's budget blueprint, the National Institutes of Health would lose almost $6 billion in funding, a massive blow to federally funded medical and scientific research.

"Hell hath no fury like a scientist scorned, and that's essentially where we are", Rogers said. For instance, only four percent of the world's engineering degrees are earned in the US, as opposed to 56 percent in Asia and 17 percent in Europe.

Since February of this year, the Trump administration has put forward federal spending proposals which would see the US Government's spending on basic science shrink by 10.5 per cent in 2018. Fewer than half of Americans believe that climate change is due to human activity, according to a Pew study released previous year. A week later, April 29, another large gathering - the People's Climate March - is planned in Washington.

The long-term goals for the march are also a bit fuzzy - though Andrew Rosenberg, director of the Center for Science and Democracy at the UCS, sees it as a chance to highlight the role of scientific evidence in public discussion and policy.

"I fear that scientists protesting in support of their own disciplines may inadvertently reinforce risky perceptions that scientists are part of a detached elite", said Michael Biercuk, professor of quantum physics at the University of Sydney.

MIT and Harvard renewable energy modeler Dr. Geoffrey Supran added, "The March for Science and the Peoples Climate March go hand-in-hand". We are fighting for our future and the future of our planet here.

For many, the march stands for more than a simple demonstration against the current administration's policies. "In the face of an alarming trend toward discrediting scientific consensus and restricting scientific discovery, we might ask instead: can we afford not to speak out in its defense?" It's galling to me because I traded a scientific career for full-time communication work because good scientific information helps people make the best decisions to take us into the future.
