Netflix series '13 Reasons Why' sparks conversation about mental health

13 Reasons Why Season 2

The show, which debuted in March, follows the story of a 17-year-old girl who commits suicide and leaves behind audio recordings of the 13 reasons why she made a decision to do so. In New York, a letter sent by administrators at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, also warned parents about the show.

She encourages parents to ask their children if they've watched the show, and then have a discussion about it. "If you have a kid who is struggling or is some years out from a mental health issue-anyone who's had a suicide attempt or become suicidal-they should just stay away from this show", Moutier said. "We wanted to do what we could to turn people's attention to more positive ways of using a show we expected young people are going to watch".

Local suicide prevention advocates are giving reasons why not to watch the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why" that revolves around a student who kills herself.

I've seen a lot of controversy surrounding the show on social media - one side states that audiences should avoid that show claiming that it is glorifying suicide, and that it is a trigger warning to some people with mental health issues.

Montclair Public Schools has sent a message out to families, caregivers and staff from Andrew D. Evangelista, Mental Health Coordinator, regarding the Netflix series "13 Reasons Why".

Security Forces Mobilized For Election After Paris Attack
Although pollsters put Le Pen in second place behind Macron in the first round, she is seen as unlikely to win the second. French President Francois Hollande has been holding an emergency meeting this morning in response to the attack.

Deputy Chief Censor Jared Mullen says the classification of the previously unclassified series signals the "strong content" and that parents and caregivers should play a role in discussing what the show depicts.

Lockwood Hales is a mental health professional, and after reviewing it, she found the content troubling, especially for at risk kids watching it alone.

A concern of suicide prevention experts is that the show might glamorize suicide and cause a child who already is thinking about it to copycat.

"Everybody is talking about it, it's crazy" says Anna Stryjewska, high school student. All of the things that the show portrays are real and they affect people around us every single day. In fact, they have called the act in the series "13 Reasons Why" as entertaining. If you are allowing your student to read the book, please have them keep their copy at home as the material is not appropriate for an elementary school campus.

In Brewster, we have experienced tragedies that have left children and adults alike deeply saddened and marked by these experiences.
