White House: US Not Withdrawing From NAFTA Now

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau walks off at the conclusion of a joint news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington Monday Feb. 13 2017

Now he's drawn a new target — Canada.

Canada and the industry say the U.S.is completely wrong and that the U.S. Lumber Coalition is not using the same types of logs for comparison when arguing Canadian prices are lower. "The irony is the very people that voted for the current president will consequently pay more for lumber with this trade action". We will not stand for this.

Although initially, Trump had directed his anti-NAFTA attacks primarily at Mexico, this week the administration announced the implementation of tariffs on Canadian lumber imports. Trump has called the move "a disgrace" that hurts U.S. producers in dairy states like Wisconsin.

Representatives from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada were meeting with Ottawa Wednesday to discuss the potential impact of NAFTA renegotiations on the Canadian mining industry, said executive director, Andrew Cheatle. "The message here is that the US not only talks tough, it acts tough".

But now, the Trump administration is ramping up the rhetoric against Ottawa. "Everyone thinks of Canada as being wonderful, and so do I". "I love Canada. But they've outsmarted our politicians for many years, and you people understand that".

In a way, the tensions are surprising. She previously worked in the Legal Adviser's Office at the U.S. Department of State and at the U.S. International Trade Commission.

Earlier in the day, stories has circulated that President Trump was going to withdraw from NAFTA altogether.

$350.2 million in taxes and other revenue for governments in the U.S.

Timber industry leaders in Montana are applauding the results of a federal investigation that found Canada unfairly subsidizes its timber business, allowing Canadian companies to undercut USA businesses with lower prices and lots of volume. Some softwood lumber companies could begin issuing layoff notices as early as next week as the fallout from the new import tariffs slapped onto Canadian softwood by the USA government start kicking in.

"'Disagrees strongly.' Them's fightin' words". He said the company hopes the notice starts the process, as opposed to ending it.

Ultimately, if you look at those teams that year-after-year, over time, have been successful, the big growth has come from within. An initial Monahan shot from the slot created a rebound off of Gibson which sent Anaheim's defense into a flurry of panic.

The softwood lumber tariffs represent the new USA administration's first foray into trade negotiations with Canada, so the way Ottawa and industry respond will be precedent setting, said Kevin Edgson, president and CEO of Eacom Timber Corp.

He described Canada as "generally a good neighbor", asserting that its allegedly unfair trade practices regarding lumber and dairy were not very neighborly. "That doesn't mean they don't have to play by the rules".

But there are too many easy targets here to ignore for a president looking to become a champion of American industry, which includes Wisconsin dairy farms and SC foresters. In 2016, the industry accounted for $14 billion in exports - 35 per cent of the value of all B.C. goods exported. Our governments have put bans on raw-log exports in the name of protecting Canadian sawmills and governments sell the logs to the industry.

In recent days, however, he has taken a harder line with Canada, blasting a recent change in the dairy pricing policy there.

Some American dairy farmers have been devastated.

Canada said it was ready to come to talks on renewing NAFTA at any time. "If we have to turn around and dump the milk, we'd be looking at a $35,000 loss every month".

But Mr Trudeau also said his officials "will work constructively together" with the United States. He also denounced Canada's dairy supply management system as a "disgrace" that is costing American farmers their livelihoods.

The majority of Canadians, including the prime minister and his colleagues, "understand that President Trump is prone to making ill-informed, off-the-cuff and arbitrary comments about a host of domestic and foreign policy issues", Donald Abelson, the chairman of the political science department at the University of Western Ontario in London, told VOA.

Talk of leaving NAFTA also caused alarm among USA crop and meat producers.

"Canadians are pretty thick-skinned", she says.
