US talk about Koreas draws China silence, dispute from Seoul

"South Korea and U.S. strike forces began a drill in the East Sea from 6 p.m. today against the backdrop of the current security situation", the South Korean Navy said.

The South Korean navy said the drills are aimed at "deterring North Korea's provocations and displaying the firm alliance between the United States and South Korea". It also confirmed the start of full-scale deployment. It is unclear whether North Korea will launch a preemptive attack against the United States or its allies, but USA officials are reaching an "inflection point" in which North Korea can carry through on repeated threats to do so, the admiral said.

Harris told the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that the USA -delivered THAAD anti-ballistic missile system being installed in South Korea would be operational in "a couple of days".

Harris also said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "is clearly in a position to threaten Hawaii today, in my opinion".

Noting that the ships had eventually gone on to sail towards the Korean peninsula, he said they are still en route.

North Korea's official media reported Wednesday that leader Kim Jong Un personally observed the exercises, which involved the firing of more than 300 large-calibre artillery pieces and included submarine torpedo-attacks on mock enemy warships.

The House hearing on North Korea comes as the United States seeks to tamp down talk of military action against the unpredictable adversary. Wayne E. Meyer was on a scheduled western Pacific deployment with aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson.

Gatilov of Russian Federation, which typically follows China's lead on North Korea, backed Beijing's suspension-for-suspension proposal.

“We know that the two launchers kept in the US Army unit of Wakgok-gun, Chilgok-gun are surely deployed, ” a South Korean official told Yonhap on Wednesday morning.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi was speaking Friday at a U.N. Security Council ministerial meeting, amid growing alarm over Pyongyang's weapons development and escalating tensions in the region.

In an interview Thursday, Tillerson said Beijing has threatened to impose sanctions on North Korea if it conducts further nuclear tests.

Graham responded with a message for North Korea: "In case North Korea's listening, none of us want to invade your country..." The Navy said that both exercises demonstrate the ability of the US and Japan to work together at sea to respond quickly to threats in the region.

"The more that we can solve this diplomatically and continue to apply pressure on China and other countries to use the political and economic tools that they have to achieve a goal in stabilization in the region, but also to tamp down the threat that North Korea faces, I think that that is something that we all share", said White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

Wang Yi said the global community must stay committed to parallel progress on denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and upholding peace and stability. At the same time, the USS Michigan, a nuclear-powered submarine armed with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles, arrived in South Korea.

"It seems to me that the Chinese threat to cut oil supplies is having an impact, and North Korea has shown some restraint these last few weeks, choosing not to test either on Kim il-Sung's birthday or this week when it was their Armed Forces Day", Walsh noted.

Mr Tillerson called for new sanctions on North Korea and urged all countries to exert pressure on Pyongyang and implement the six United Nations sanctions resolutions. "I'm reasonably optimistic now that China is having an influence and they're working in the right direction with regards to North Korea thanks to the efforts by our president and theirs". He said any North Korean missile fired at USA forces would be destroyed.

Harris said he believes "America's future is linked" to the Pacific, even noting a possible migration of Islamic State militants back to the region as USA forces push to regain former ISIS territory in the Middle East.
