MRI confirms partial lat tear for Mets' Noah Syndergaard

MRI confirms partial lat tear for Mets' Noah Syndergaard

His confidence was not rewarded as he only pitched into the second inning of Sunday's game against the NL East Division rival Washington Nationals before having to leave the game as he felt something pull in his right lateral muscle.

It was an exasperating and discouraging turn of events for the injury-plagued Mets (10-14), now missing perhaps their two top players. "He will be placed on the 10-day disabled list".

Pitcher Steven Matz remained in the pitching lineup with bone spurs in his elbows previous year. The team is already without several key players such as Lucas Duda, Wilmer Flores, David Wright, Steven Matz, Seth Lugo and Yoenis Cespedes.

Syndergaard (1-2) gave up five runs on five hits in the first inning of Sunday's 23-5 loss to the Nationals. Personal statistics became secondary to personal wellbeing when Syndergaard delivered a 2-1 pitch to Washington slugger Bryce Harper and immediately grabbed underneath his right armpit.

Instead of forcing him to take an MRI to see if any structural damage was sustained, Sandy Alderson instead told the media that he "can't strap him down and throw him in the tube". Right now, MLB.com's Anthony DiComo reports that Rafael Montero will start in place of Syndergaard. Alderson said the pitcher was on his way to NY for a 7 a.m. appointment Monday.

The Mets' ace right-hander headed back to NY to get an MRI, something he refused to do a few days ago after he was scratched from his start on Thursday in Atlanta against the Braves with a exhausted arm.

"The recommendation was made by the doctor; it was precautionary". He said he felt fine.

We could question how the Mets didn't just say: if you don't take the test, you're not starting.

"I don't know how big his house is", teammate Tom Koehler said, "but he's going to need a lot of wall space for that one". Terry Collins' club is reeling - not the best time for a road trip to face the red-hot, division leading Nationals.

"Heroes die real fast in baseball", Collins said.

For references the latissimus dorsi-or lat-is the giant muscle that extends from your lower back, up to connect the humerus bone in your arm to your shoulder.

"You think?" Collins snapped.

"Ya think? What do you think?" he said. "I said over the last few days we had looked at that possibility". Or we can chalk it up to this: in a game with elbows bending at unnatural angles and balls being thrown at unnatural speeds, there is bound to be the sight of someone as good as Syndergaard holding his arm in pain. "It's all been explained, and it was explained to Noah when we skipped him".

ORIOLES 7, YANKEES 4 (11 INNINGS): Mark Trumbo hit a go-ahead single in a three-run 11th off Bryan Mitchell, who returned to the mound after an unusual inning at first base, and Baltimore rebounded at NY from another blown late lead.

Portland's Nurkic out Game 2, Warriors' Durant questionable
As a team, the Blazers shot just 33 percent from the field and seven of 34 from the three-point line. Based on our Game 1 we need to pick it up on that end anyway so it should be a good challenge.
