Always Dreaming wins Kentucky Derby

But that combination, along with Always Dreaming's three straight victories in five career starts, helped the horse surpass Classic Empire as the 9-2 favorite Saturday morning.

By winning the Derby, he accomplished something his sire Bodemeister couldn't do.

Trainer Todd Pletcher talks about Kentucky Derby champion Always Dreaming at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., Sunday, May 7, 2017.

"I knew we had a big shot with this horse and I was hoping it would happen", said Pletcher, who also won with Super Saver in 2010. "He just keeps coming".

But the story of the guys who bought him started long before that. He was no doubt the alpha horse when he took over at the top of the stretch putting away every challenger easily. "The main thing is I wanted to control the pace of his gallops".

Normally, when a jockey or trainer says a horse didn't like the surface, it's code for "we don't know why they didn't run".

"I think it was a big part of why he was successful today". I want to thank everyone for their support. But from the moment he arrived in Pletcher's barn from a winter freshening, he showed the talent to justify pointing him to this race.

Green Bay also has three returning running back on its offseason roster in Ty Montgomery , Christine Michael and Don Jackson. Biegel also fits into the team's recent philosophy of drafting players with the potential to play multiple positions.

"Growing up as a kid, we've won a lot of Kentucky Derbies", said Bonomo, a lawyer, "but never in reality". Jockey John Velazquez stalked in second behind longshot State of Honor before taking the lead after 6 furlongs in a quick 1:11.12.

Pletcher said: "I think this is even more special than the first one". He has since calmed down and John Velazquez will be in the saddle Saturday to lend an experienced hand. "I thought a couple of times he wasn't completely in the bridle", Pletcher said. His only previous Derby victor, Super Saver, finished eighth in the 2010 Preakness. "As soon as he got on the backside he was going real comfortable".

Otherwise, it was a cleanly run race up front, with Always Dreaming easily putting away State of Honor before drawing clear.

Rajiv Maragh, who suffered a major injury at Belmont Park in 2015 in which he said he felt he was close to death, made a comeback just by making it to the Derby with Irish War Cry. The 3-year-old colt finished by a clean two and three-quarters lengths ahead of long shot Lookin At Lee, who drew the unlucky first post. Battle of Midway, at 40-1, paid $20.80.

"The first order of business is to make sure he came out of it well, and the second order of business is how can you get there and what's the best approach to getting to the Preakness", Pletcher said. "He broke well and he put me right in the race".

"There's not that much separation from this bunch of 3-year-olds right now, from what I can see, other than maybe the victor yesterday", said trainer Ken McPeek, who is pointing Lexington Stakes victor Senior Investment toward the Preakness. At the eighth pole, the only horse running at the leader was Lookin At Lee, who finished a fast-closing fourth to Classic Empire in the Arkansas Derby. "Looking at what the options are, at Pimlico there usually aren't a lot of horses training there". Lookin At Lee returned $26.60 and $15.20, while Battle of Midway paid $20.80. "It was a really good trip, the kind I dream of and pray for", said Lanerie.

If this were the 2016 presidential election, Always Dreaming would be Donald Trump and Patch would be Hillary Clinton.
