Sheriff pushes back against Texas' "sanctuary city" ban

Texas Governor Greg Abbott caused a stir on Monday after signing an order banning the "sanctuary cities" practice of protecting immigrants across the state.

"Last night, Governor Abbot signed Senate Bill Four to require all law enforcement to become immigration officers", Juanita Valdez-Cox said.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas approved a measure to ban "sanctuary cities" on Sunday, allowing law enforcement officers during a routine stop to question any individual about their citizenship status. She has made police outreach to immigrant communities a cornerstone of her tenure.

The Texas Tribune thanks its sponsors. The legislation calls for any Texas official who declines to fully cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after detaining an undocumented immigrant and makes it legal for law enforcement to inquire someone's citizenship status during even the most minor of interactions, Reuters reports. Officials who do not follow the law could face jail time or removal from office and local law enforcement agencies could lose $25,000 per day upon failure to comply. The bill also applies to colleges. McManus said, referring to an officer's reason for inquiring about a person's immigration status. Its passage is a major victory for Abbott and Republicans who advocate for stricter enforcement of immigration law.

Opponents of the law were quick to condemn the signing. According to FWPD General Orders, the department does not arrest undocumented people exclusively based on suspicion they are here illegally.

One of the sponsors of the bill, Republican state Representative Charlie Geren, said in a House of Representatives debate the bill would have no effect on immigrants in the country without documentation if they had not committed a crime.

Critics of the legislation say that it will allow authorities to discriminate against Hispanics.

Why Macron Won The French Presidential Race
Capturing the presidency is a remarkable achievement for Macron, who built his En Marche! movement in just the past one year. The final count from the interior ministry put his total at 66.1 per cent of the vote against Ms Le Pen's 33.9 per cent.

"The people of the state of Texas wanted it, and the legislators delivered it", Waybourn says.

MCGLINCHY: Legal maneuvering over the bill has already started. "Senate Bill 4 protects all Texans though uniform application of the law without prejudice". But Arizona's attorney general later told police to ignore that provision as part of a settlement agreement.

Officials in Mexico's 11 consulates across Texas will begin efforts to educate people on the effects of the law and will monitor how it's implemented, the Mexican Foreign Relations Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The lawsuit filed under the federal Declaratory Judgement Act, asks a judge to declare S.B.

Immigrants' rights groups and police forces statewide - including in Houston - criticized the bill as potentially sowing distrust of law enforcement among immigrants.

In fact, Hernandez does honor detainer requests from federal immigration authorities for inmates accused of serious offenses.
