Why Macron Won The French Presidential Race

Austria's presidential election past year took three rounds but ultimately resulted in pro-Europe Green candidate Alexander Van den Bellen being elected. Macron is already looking the part. On Sunday night, with victory finally sealed, he was much more solemn.

The pomp of the ceremony, at the imposing Arc de Triomphe at the top of the Champs-Elysees Avenue in Paris, immediately helped lend a presidential air to the previously untested leader who fought and won his first election.

Unlike the cliffhanger in France, however, the outcome is set to be a win-win for Macron, as well as for the bloc.

But his push for reform could provoke an early showdown with France's influential labour unions - as Macron knows well from his earlier tangles with the unions as economy minister.

On Monday, though, Hollande gripped Macron's arm before the two men walked side by side and then announced the transfer of power would take place on Sunday.

Centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron cast his vote in the upmarket seaside resort of Le Touquet, where he has a home. Then, just weeks before French voters went to the polls for the election's first round, Le Pen met with Putin in Moscow, where she reportedly criticized European Union sanctions on Russian Federation as "unfair and silly".

So will we see a new France and what does his victory mean for Europe?

Le Pen's National Front (FN) party is likely to greatly increase its share of parliamentary seats. They will be crucial for a president whose En Marche! movement has no experience contesting legislative elections.

Myles Garrett brings the heat for his first pitch in Cleveland
Garrett is aware of recent criticism about his game, including remarks by Hall of Famer Warren Sapp, who called him "lazy". Garrett, a freakish athlete who has been accused of sometimes taking plays off, could help change that.

Macron's victory extends a losing run for Putin, who had banked on political upheaval in Western capitals bringing in new leaders better disposed towards Russian Federation.

This weekend's election might not to be the catastrophe many feared, but it's only the end of a chapter. Even nominally pro-E.U. leaders such as center-right Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte have more typically vowed to protect their citizens from European Union overreach - hardly a message that would rejuvenate the beleaguered bloc. The more moderate Socialist alternative, former prime minister Manuel Valls, lost his party's primary, opening new room in the political center.

Capturing the presidency is a remarkable achievement for Macron, who built his En Marche! movement in just the past one year. Half will be women, he said, and half will have never held elected office. But that is far from guaranteed. Macron needs to tackle the job of creating labor-market flexibility that will allow for greater productivity, said Hani Redha, managing director at PineBridge Investment's multi-asset team, in an interview.

The mood in Paris - at the Louvre, on the Champs Elysee, and around the town in poorer neighborhoods - was proud, and relieved that France has stemmed the flow of worldwide isolationism and division. Overnight Sunday, police arrested 141 people in eastern Paris in clashes with masked protesters. He wants to renew the way we do politics.

Back on May 6, 2012, it was Democratic president Barack Obama who dialed socialist Francois Hollande the day of his victory to offer congratulations and invite Europe's newest leader to the White House ahead of a G8 summit. It will release its list of 577 candidates on Thursday. The final count from the interior ministry put his total at 66.1 per cent of the vote against Ms Le Pen's 33.9 per cent. The National Front is also gearing up for a rebranding - if not a makeover - of its ideas.

During the USA presidential campaign, Putin spoke in glowing terms about Donald Trump.

According to Daniel Boy, Senior Researcher at the Centre for Political Research at the French Sciences Po university (CEVIPOF), Macron will focus on dealing with the unemployment as soon as he starts his activities as a president, because during the elections campaign a lot of Macron's promises concerned this phenomenon.

A decisive victory in Germany's northern state of Schleswig-Holstein on Sunday (Monday NZT), however, boosted Merkel's prospects of winning the national election in September and left Schulz admitting bluntly he was "disappointed". France's benchmark Cac 40 opened at a nine-year high but ended 0.9 per cent lower on Monday. The Stoxx Europe 600 SXXP, -0.13% is at around a 21-month high, and up 9% in euro terms.
