Activists say Kurdish-led forces advance on IS-held Raqqa

What is clear is that it is unlikely that the US decision will prompt a solution to the conflict between Turkey and the PKK, or soften relations between Ankara and the Syrian Kurds.

According to Mr Yildirim, the United States has also promised that Kurdish forces that may enter Raqqa (Isis's de facto capital in Syria), as part of an American-backed offensive, will not be allowed to stay in the city. Turkey considers the Syrian Kurdish group, known as the YPG, a terrorist group because of its ties to the outlawed Kurdish Workers' Party inside Turkey.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan censured the Americans this week for arming what he considers an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a militant group in Turkey that its North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies recognize as a terrorist organization.

"If we are strategic allies we must take decisions as an alliance". That argument holds little sway with Ankara, which worries that advances by the YPG in northern Syria could inflame the PKK insurgency on Turkish soil. American military commanders insist that the weapons will be carefully monitored, and the YPG in any case, denies that it is linked to the PKK.

Forty PKK and YPG- affiliated terrorists died in Turkey's late-April bombing attacks on Sinjar, and 30 of them were killed in the attack on the Karachok Mountains (Sabah, April 25).

But Turkey fears that would enable them to proclaim a Kurdish republic on its southern frontier.

Ducks' reward for Game 7 win is date with Rinne and Preds
Drake Caggiula had a goal and Cam Talbot made 28 saves for the Oilers, who fell to 3-3 all-time when playing Game 7 on the road. The 21-year-old power forward wasn't around for any of the Anaheim Ducks' agonizing Game 7 defeats over the past four seasons.

Erdogan, shown at a news conference after talks with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, is already facing domestic anger about Washington's YPG arms decision, writes CBC's Nil Köksal. The Pentagon said on Tuesday it was aware of concerns in Turkey, which has given vital support to a USA -led campaign against Islamic State insurgents in Syria and Iraq.

"As a volunteer that has spent years supporting the YPG, I'm astonished this sort of help didn't come sooner".

"It's obvious that the United States has sent a clear message of "we are going to go our own way" on Syria", wrote Mehmet Yilmaz, columnist for the Hurriyet daily. "We do not want any other forces to participate with us". "Such a policy will not be beneficial; you can't be in the same sack as terrorist organizations". To facilitate its air campaign against ISIS, the US relies on Incirlik's proximity to Syria and Iraq - so there is some risk in alienating the Turks. "We'll work out any of the concerns". "He was very clear that the United States regards the PKK as a terrorist organisation and will start tackling the money of the PKK", said the Prime Minister. The visit of Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag on May 8 was widely believed to be another effort by Turkey to secure the extradition of Gulen, regardless of the reportedly weak evidence submitted for the extradition request.

The blustery display of anti-Americanism comes as the USA -backed coalition in Syria, which is poised to launch a long-awaited offensive to liberate the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa, faces widespread criticism across the border for its dependence on the YPG.

"I do not wish to discuss military matters", Muslim said. Uslu said he expected Erdogan to present Trump with a plan for a Turkish role in the Raqqa area once the fighting there was over, to prevent a re-emergence of ISIS and to keep the Kurds from expanding their territory to the west of the Euphrates River. Turkish commentators have argued the town could become a second Qandil Mountain (NTV, January 5), referring to the famous mountain intensively used by the PKK as a training ground, headquarters, and a safe haven in northern Iraq. And American officials have stressed that the USA will try to ensure that the arms supplied to Kurdish fighters aren't smuggled out for separatist attacks on Turkish interests.
