White House Says Trump's 'Tapes' Tweet About Comey Wasn't a Threat

In a tweet, President Trump suggests canceling press briefings

Then he suggested doing away with the daily press briefing, the one place almost every day where his staff can respond to critiques, correct misinformation, and push a positive message.

The president tweeted early Friday that "Again, the story that there was collusion between the Russians & Trump campaign was fabricated by Dems as an excuse for losing the election". The associate with knowledge of the conversation confirmed an account of the conversation in The New York Times is accurate.

A group of IL congressional Democrats on Friday continued to beat the drum for a special prosecutor to investigate ties between President Donald Trump's administration and Russian Federation, saying Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey is the strongest indication yet that he's trying to prevent a full accounting of the connections.

My practice during the six and a half years that I was at DNI was always to defer to the director of the FBI, be it Director Bob Mueller or Director Jim Comey on whether, when, and what to tell me about a counterintelligence investigation when the possibility was there that this could devolve into some sort of a criminal investigation.

As in Friday's briefing, Spicer refused to commit when asked if the White House would keep the daily briefing. Comey declined, instead offering "honest".

Trump pushed back when Pirro suggested Spicer could be replaced, though the president did concede that the spokesman has faced difficulties.

The ABC News report referred to comments by Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the deputy White House press secretary, who accused Comey of committing "atrocities" against Hillary Clinton.

The FBI has never had a female director.

Shortly after the interview was published, Jonathan Karl, the chief White House correspondent for ABC News, asked Sanders if she, Spicer and Pence had been "left in the dark" about Trump's decision making or had been misled.

Activists say Kurdish-led forces advance on IS-held Raqqa
American military commanders insist that the weapons will be carefully monitored, and the YPG in any case, denies that it is linked to the PKK.

Senate Intel Committee Ranking Member Mark Warner said he's hoping to hear from Comey in the "not-to-distant future".

It was recordings of phone calls and conversations at the White House during Richard Nixon's presidency that played a part in forcing his resignation over the Watergate scandal.

Trump's actions got immediate Democratic pushback because it was a blow to the foundation of American democracy: the rule of law.

"He's simply stated a fact", Spicer said. "He's unsafe because he may be obstructing justice in terms of the investigation. and secondly his credibility has been destroyed".

The warning appeared to suggest that if Comey gave his version of events, the administration might produce tapes of conversations to counter that, although it was not clear if such tapes exist. And he said he feared the world would no longer take Trump at his word.

Trump, in his NBC interview, said he had been intending to fire Comey for months and that it had nothing to do with the Russian Federation investigation. "I would find that very inconsistent with what I know of Jim Comey", Clapper told MSNBC, adding it would have been "out of character for him to ask to stay on".

According to the White House, it believed the rank and file of the Federal Bureau of Investigation had lost confidence in Comey before he was fired-so much so that it was one of the most important reasons for his firing.

Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe testifies before the Senate Intelligence Committee in the Hart Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill May 11, 2017 in Washington, DC. Later, however, they said that Trump had planned to fire Comey regardless.

Comey has not publicly discussed any conversations he has had with Trump.
