'WannaCry' ransomware attack: What we know

The cyber attack struck firms across the globe

"We will get a decryption tool eventually, but for the moment, it's still a live threat and we're still in disaster recovery mode", Europol director Rob Wainwright told CNN on Sunday.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland, Dr Andrew Cowie from Hawkhill Medical Centre in Dundee, said: "They haven't got everything up and running yet, so it's going to be a bit of a hard day". Cybersecurity experts have said the majority of the attacks targeted Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan.

Government agencies and universities were among those hit as well as petrol stations, ATMs and hospitals, it said.

At least five South Korean firms reported that the virus had damaged their computers, the Korea Internet & Security Agency said. The ransomware was created to repeatedly contact an unregistered domain in its code. One did not include the so-called kill switch that allowed researchers to interrupt the malware's spread Friday by diverting it to a dead end on the internet.

However, a hacker could change the code to remove the domain and try the ransomware attack again.

There is no single solution to restore your computer if it has been infected. Copycat attacks could follow.

Avast, an global security-software firm that claims it has 400 million users worldwide, said the ransomware attacks rose rapidly Saturday to a peak of 57,000 detected intrusions.

"WannaCry" or ransomware is a malware that encrypts content on infected systems and demands payment in bitcoins. The exploit was leaked last month as part of a trove of NSA spy tools. While Microsoft patched the vulnerability pretty quickly after the release, many clients have not run the updates needed to deploy the latest patch.

Most of the amusing lines or actions come from Drax and Baby Groot, who steal the show... or should I say movie, wink. Color abounds throughout the movie, drenching most of the landscape visuals, as well as numerous action scenes.

The attack has left 47 NHS organisations affected with malware in their system, ranging from hospital trusts to commissioning support units.

The patches won't do any good for machines that have already been hit.

"As far as I know there's only been two variants (one this morn) and none without [a kill] switch", security researcher Dave Kennedy told El Reg. Wainwright said Europol did not know the motive. That's a frightening thought considering the disruptions the virus caused.

Britain is spending around £50mil (RM279.95mil) on improving the security of the National Health Service's computer systems and had warned the NHS it faced cyber threats, defence minister Michael Fallon said on May 14.

While any size company could be vulnerable, many large organizations with robust security departments would have prioritized the update that Microsoft released in March and wouldn't be vulnerable to Friday's attack.

"Our Data Security Centre continues to work around the clock alongside the National Cyber Security Centre, to support NHS organisations that have reported any issues related to this cyber-attack", the body said - alongside issuing guidance on protecting against the cyberattack, explaining which patches to apply.

The virus prompted the Indian government to shut down hundreds of ATMs in a bid to escape the attack, the country's Ministry of Home Affairs said, as cited by the India Today.

The Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center said 2,000 computers in Japan were reported affected so far, citing an affiliate foreign security organization that it can not identify.
