Fiat Chrysler shares drop on US diesel emissions probe

The auxiliary emission control devices, which could be similar to the defeat devices used in 500,000 VW and Audi vehicles in the US and 11 million worldwide, were first uncovered by the EPA after the agency expanded a testing program to screen for defeat devices in light duty vehicles.

The European Commission's official demand for information from the Italian government is significant: If Italy does not provide the commission with the requested information within two months, the process could head in the direction of EU courts taking up the matter.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and California Air Resources Board in January accused FCA of illegally using undisclosed software to allow excess diesel emissions in 104,000 U.S. 2014-2016 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Ram 1500 trucks. That mediation ended in March.

Italy's Transport Minister Graziano Delrio said the authorities there have not found any illegal devices in use but he failed to get the Commission's legal action postponed. European Union officials have become frustrated with what they perceive as governments being too closely aligned with automakers to clamp down on emissions violations, especially polluting nitrogen oxide (NOx), ever since the Volkswagen emissions cheating scandal broke in 2015.

Ransomware WannaCry to attack Indian banking system soon: Cyber expert
Security experts are studying a computer software virus that has affected computers in at least 150 countries. But because so many companies didn't apply it, the so-called WannaCry attack spread like cholera.

EU officials have become significantly frustrated with what they see as governments conspiring with the powerful auto market and the legal move is the biggest stick the European Commission has available to require countries to clamp down on diesel vehicles that gush out polluting nitrogen oxide (NOx).

The current regulations allow governments in European Union member nations to approve new vehicles that could then be sold throughout the EU.

Last year, the Commission proposed an overhaul of rules on how vehicles are licensed and tested across the EU, but has faced resistance from member states and European Parliament.

Delrio, has although stated that the material Italy had sent to the Commission throughout the mediation process revealed that the vehicles' approval process was correctly carried out.
