DHS hopeful Clarke denies plagiarism in master's thesis

Sheriff David Clarke's thesis deleted from school's website after plagiarism accusation

Wisconsin sheriff and outspoken Donald Trump supporter David Clark reportedly plagiarized parts of his college master's thesis on USA security, according to evidence uncovered by CNN. CNN reported Saturday that Clarke plagiarized significant portions of his 2013 thesis on homeland security, failing to properly cite his sources 47 times.

Clarke responded by telling the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that someone with a political agenda would make these accusations.

Fran McLaughlin, Clarke's public information officer at the Sheriff's Department, said the school has a system for doing papers and Clarke followed it. Monica Crowley, who withdrew her name from consideration for a role with the National Security Council because of plagiarism allegations surrounding her 2012 book-a point Clarke was quick to call out on Twitter when answering to the CNN story.

Clarke on Wednesday claimed that he had accepted a position with the Department of Homeland Security as an assistant secretary.

A school spokesman told CNN it would conduct a plagiarism investigation, and it has removed Clarke's thesis from the school's archive. Clint Phillips that said, "Like all academic institutions, the Naval Postgraduate School takes the integrity of our students' work very seriously, perhaps even more than our peers given the unique nature of our mission and student body". Under the guidelines of the school, if passages are quoted verbatim, no matter what length these passages are they "must" be set off in quotation marks.

The video, taken by his father Edward Zuckerberg, shows a young Mark in his pyjamas sat at his computer checking emails. He initially tried to push the camera away before he celebrated with a quiet: " Yay, I got accepted ".

"Guy is a sleaze bag'" he tweeted.

CNN KFILE reporter Andrew Kaczynski went on the network Saturday night to defend the story. Specifically, Clarke, a former Trump surrogate, said he'll be working in the department's Office of Partnership and Engagement as a liaison for state, local, and tribal law enforcement. In January, after she was widely criticized for her alleged plagiarism, Crowley chose to pull her name out of the running for a job as a senior aide in then-President-elect Trump's administration. The DHS has not yet confirmed his appointment.

For years, Clarke has been a favorite of conservative media and campaigned for President Trump during the 2016 election. He has criticized the Black Lives Matter movement, which grew out of protests over a number of police killings of unarmed black men, as "subhuman creeps". Clarke wasn't among the seven because prosecutors say he wasn't directly involved in the events leading up to the inmate's death.

Milwaukee County Supervisor Peggy West, a critic of Sheriff Clarke, says she shook her head when she heard he would be moving to a federal agency.
