Convicted serial killer found volunteering at elementary school

Karla Homolka

Canadian serial killer Karla Homolka now volunteers at a Christian elementary school.

Homolka, who along with Bernardo were known as the "Ken and Barbie" killers due to their clean-cut looks, struck a controversial plea deal in which her sentence was reduced to just 12 years.

The 47-year-old was convicted in 1993 alongside her then-husband Paul Bernando of the torture, rape and killing of schoolgirls Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy - as well as her own 15-year-old sister Taffy.

On one occasion, Homolka was asked to come into the classroom at Greaves Adventist Academy "to show the students something related to knitting", CTV News reported on Wednesday. Homolka told investigators that she was an unwilling accomplice to the crimes, and that she had been threatened by her accomplice Paul Bernardo, who had forced her to help him rape and murder his victims. "She is not a regular volunteer, and can never be alone with any children, either in school or churches", Seventh-day Adventist Church spokesman Stan Jensen told CityNews. But letting notorious child-murderer Karla Homolka volunteer at a school seems a bit unwise.

A convicted serial killer and rapist has been discovered working at a school with children as young as four.

On Tuesday afternoon, Seventh-Day Adventist Church, which runs the school, shared a statement to calm the parents.

She pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of French and Mahaffey.

Ariana Grande to hold benefit concert for Manchester bomb victims
Police say they think Abedi assembled his bomb at a rented apartment in central Manchester that was raided by officers Wednesday. Associated Press writer Jill Lawless reported this story from London and AP writer Mstyslav Chernov reported in Manchester .

Stephanie Deligne, whose daughter attends Grade 4 and is in a class with one of Homolka's children, said she would have liked to have been informed about the situation.

Karla Homolka reportedly volunteered at a primary school in Notre-Dame-de-GrĂ¢ce, according to a report by Breakfast Television and CityNews news.

The couple have three children together and briefly moved to the Caribbean before moving back to Canada in 2016.

Tim Danson, a lawyer representing the Mahaffy and French families, told the Canadian Press that they considered Homolka's freedom and quiet life with her husband and children a "kick in the gut".

One parent, who asked to be referred to as Lily, said she and other parents have tried to ban Homolka from engaging with their children, but have had no luck.

"I think she's risky and I certainly wouldn't take the chance with my kids to be around her", he added.

Nancy Grace and Alan Duke discuss the parental outrage that has followed the revelation that she is now participating in show-and-tell and chaperoning field trips at her kid's school.
