UN warns Trump against quitting Paris Climate Deal

White House press secretary Sean Spicer speaks during the daily press briefing at the White House in Washington Tuesday

While traveling overseas last week, Trump was repeatedly pressed to stay in the deal by European leaders and Pope Francis. Like the other officials, that person was not authorized to describe the private discussions by name and spoke only on condition of anonymity.

On Wednesday, a White House official said Trump is indeed expected to withdraw the US from the accord, but may use "caveats in the language" when the time comes - leaving open the possibility that the decision isn't final. Several of his top aides have opposed the action, too, as has his daughter and adviser, Ivanka Trump. Others who supported staying included Trump's secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, and major oil companies such as ExxonMobil and Shell.

The head of the Environmental Protection Agency, Scott Pruitt, who met with Trump on Tuesday, has overtly advocated quitting a deal he judges "bad" for America. That means it could take another three-and-half years for the U.S.to formally withdraw, though Trump promised to stop implementation immediately.

The agreement itself includes pillars that involve American data, including material from NASA and other US federal departments, and if the USA walks away Vaughan said there will be gaps to fill.

Underlining that science behind climate change "is beyond doubt", Mr. Guterres said: "As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put it: "Human influence on the climate system is clear".

It also aims to strengthen the ability of countries to deal with the impacts of climate change and calls for scaled up financial flows, a new technology framework and an enhanced capacity-building framework to support action by developing countries and the most vulnerable countries in line with their own national objectives.

It very likely will take place in Canada, around the same time as the United Nations General Assembly opens in New York City on September 12.

Trump, however, argued the agreement had disadvantaged the U.S.

In a rare statement on his successor's policies, Obama said: "Even in the absence of American leadership; even as this administration joins a small handful of nations that reject the future, I'm confident that our states, cities, and businesses will step up and do even more to lead the way, and help protect for future generations the one planet we've got".

Mickelson to miss US Open for daughter's graduation
Instead he will watch daughter Amanda graduate and give the commencement address at Pacific Ridge School in Carlsbad on June 15. Mickelson has not officially withdrawn yet but it would take an unforeseen change of scheduling to get him to change his mind .

"Both ways", Trump said. Withdrawing would leave the United States aligned only with Russian Federation among the world's industrialized economies.

The official is involved in preparing the meeting between top EU Council President Donald Tusk, Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang but can not speak on the record because their meeting statement was not finalized.

"Climate change is undeniable".

He also pointed to the opportunities that climate action can provide, such as through the creation of jobs and increased economic growth.

The Sierra Club's executive director, Michael Brune, called the expected move a "historic mistake which our grandchildren will look back on with stunned dismay at how a world leader could be so divorced from reality and morality".

Germany's environment minister told reporters Friday "there will be no new deal with the United States" on climate change and predicted global climate will "survive" Trump's maximum presidential term of eight years.

Scientists say that Earth is likely to reach more risky levels of warming sooner if the USA retreats from its pledge because America contributes so much to rising temperatures. Supporters of the deal say it's not an either-or choice. Like his boss, Pruitt has questioned the consensus of climate scientists that the Earth is warming and that man-made climate emissions are to blame. The decision has no direct impact on major US regulations on power plants and vehicle rules now aimed at reducing carbon emissions, although those are now under review by Trump as well.

The White House had signaled that withdrawal was likely, but Trump has been known to change his mind at the last minute on such major decisions. Most of the senators who signed are from states that depend on the continued burning of coal, oil and gas. They include Apple, Google and Walmart.
