Trump Wants Expanded Travel Ban Following London Terrorist Attack

President Donald Trump interacts with reporters as he welcomes Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc at the White House in D.C. in May

"People, the lawyers and the courts can call it whatever they want, but I am calling it what we need and what it is, a TRAVEL BAN!"

In a series of morning tweets, Trump says the Justice Department "should have stayed" with the first travel ban executive order. Last week, Trump officials in the Justice Department petitioned the Supreme Court to issue and emergency order reinstating the travel ban and Trump himself was of the mind that the original ban didn't go far enough. It comes after several tweets by the President over the past two days in his efforts to get his travel ban passed in the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last week, the Justice Department formally asked the Supreme Court to let a ban be put in place. Courts which reviewed the second, "watered down" version of the president's order disagreed, citing Trump's own words during his campaign to suggest that religious discrimination was, in fact, the motivating principle behind the policy.

The temporary ban blocks travel and immigration from six Middle Eastern countries - Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

"Ironically, it makes more hard the very thing that Trump was demanding: the reinstatement of his immigration order", Turley said. The social media posts have been referred to by lower court judges, and some of the president's top aides reportedly have counseled him to avoid the very kind of tweets he posted Monday morning.

US Intelligence Initiated No Assessment on Info Trump Revealed to Lavrov - Coats
Coats declined to comment during a Senate armed services committee hearing Tuesday, that had been previously scheduled. In any case, the fact that Trump fired Comey while Comey was investigating many of his associates is suspicious.

Trump's call for a ban also is not in keeping with American values and it "exceeds the president's authority", Cardin also said. Trump even criticized the US Justice Department. "The courts are slow and political!" he wrote.

Trump appeared to blame the Department of Justice, run by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, for moving forward with a "watered down" version of the policy.

Those who oppose the travel ban said Trump's Tweetstorm, ironically, helps their case.

But Trump's latest comments undercut his own team, and have lawyers sharpening their knives for a possible Supreme Court showdown. But he voiced concern that the president's tweets about legal matters could undermine the administration's agenda.

Gregory quoted statements by Trump during his campaign calling for a "Muslim ban", and wrote that a reasonable observer would likely conclude the order's "primary objective is to exclude persons from the United States on the basis of their religious beliefs". In one instance, he leveled an inaccurate criticism of London Mayor Sadiq Khan, saying the mayor was telling people there was "no reason to be alarmed" about the attack.
