Trump to nominate ex-Justice Department official to lead FBI

In his Twitter announcement, Trump described Wray as a "man of impeccable credentials".

Trump called Wray “a man of impeccable credentials, ” but offered no more information about the selection, except to end the tweet with “Details to follow.”.

The announcement comes ahead of former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey's testimony before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on the circumstances that he was sacked by Trump amid the ongoing probe into alleged Russian meddling into the USA election last November. "He has absolute integrity and honesty, and I think that the president certainly would not be making a mistake if he asked Chris Wray to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director".

Wray now works for King & Spalding's Washington and Atlanta offices where he handles various white-collar criminal and regulatory enforcement cases, according to the firm.

George W. Bush nominated him as the assistant attorney general for the criminal division in 2003.

Many lawmakers have said Trump should pick a career law enforcement professional.

Former colleagues universally applauded Wray on Wednesday.

The timing could also be aimed at blunting the impact of Comey's testimony before the Senate intelligence committee Thursday. It's a nomination which will go into the hopper for Senate committee consideration.

The announcement caps off several tumultuous weeks for the White House since Trump suddenly fired Comey, prompting allegations that Trump was trying to impede the FBI's investigation into ties between his campaign associates and Russian Federation and eventually leading Rosenstein to appoint Mueller as special counsel to oversee that investigation.

One of his most high-profile cases came in representing Christie, an early supporter of Trump during the 2016 election. "In fact, I think we've accomplished incredible things".

London Bridge attack: Three French victims among dead
Spanish banker Ignacio Echeverria (39), was killed after trying to defend a woman with his skateboard in the Borough Market area. Police identified the three attackers as Khuram Butt, 27, Rachid Redouane, 30, and 22-year-old Moroccan-Italian Youssef Zaghba.

"Chris Wray has an excellent record of public service, " said Wainstein, who also had been a candidate for the top Federal Bureau of Investigation job. His Justice Department tenure overlapped with Comey's stint as deputy attorney general.

The president met with Wray and Pistole last Tuesday at the White House.

Now a litigation partner at King & Spalding law firm, Wray is perhaps best known today as the lawyer who defended New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie in the so-called "Bridgegate" scandal.

Wray is a traditional choice for the job, given his background.

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., called Wray "tough, qualified, and principled", but added that "I look forward to sitting down with him to discuss both his commitment to our justice system and his vision for restoring public trust".

"As the key stakeholder in this process, it is critically important that the FBIAA understands his views on the FBI, Special Agents, and the criminal and national security threats that Agents combat daily", O'Connor said in his statement.

The New York Times wrote that Wray is a "mainstream pick" for the position, especially considering that Trump was at one point thinking about putting a politician in the position, which is typically filled by people without ties to public office to avoid conflicts of interest.

"I don't know the guy, but I've looked at his resume and he seems like the right person... seems like to me he's the ideal kind of person".

According to the book, "Angler" which examined Dick Cheney's vice presidency, Wray stopped Comey to relay a message: "Look, I don't know what's going on, but before your guys all pull the rip cords, please give me a heads-up so I can jump with you". He represented New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie during the investigation into the George Washington Bridge lane-closing case. Two former Christie aides were convicted of plotting to close bridge lanes to punish a Democratic mayor who wouldn't endorse the Republican governor.

Wray worked for the Justice Department under President George W. Bush.
