BDE: Israeli Killed In NYC 'Citi Bike' Accident

Citi Bike Rider Struck, Killed By Charter Bus In Chelsea

He fell to the ground rear tires of the bus rolled over him. He was immediately transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was eventually pronounced dead.

Dan Hanegby, 36, was riding the signature blue bike on West 26th Street, near Eighth Avenue, just before 8:20 a.m. when he lost control, police said.

The 52-year-old bus driver remained on the scene, police said.

As part of the city's Vision Zero campaign, it is reported that four people were killed on bicycles in NY this year and 903 were injured.

The Citi Bike network that attracts large numbers of tourists to the bustling NY streets, has 593 stations in the city and 10 more docking stations were drafted for southern Crown Heights and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens on April 5.

Hanegby, a director of investment banking at Credit Suisse, was born and raised near Tel Aviv, Israel, and served in the Israeli Defense Forces from 1999-2002.

In recent years, bicyclists in NY have said city leaders have not done enough to protect riders. Hanegby's death is the first in the estimated 43 million Citi Bike trips taken so far.

"Together with the City of NY we wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the rider's family and loved ones on this awful tragedy", said City Bike spokesperson Dani Simons in a statement.
