Jurors in manslaughter trial of Minnesota cop review videos

Closing arguments are set to begin on Monday in the trial of a Minnesota police officer charged with fatally shooting a black motorist during a traffic stop a year ago, the aftermath of which was streamed on social media by the driver's girlfriend.

Yanez, 29, has been charged with second-degree manslaughter and two counts of reckless discharge of a firearm in the shooting of 32-year-old Castile on July 6, 2016, in Falcon Heights, Minn.

After he shot Castile, Yanez is heard on the squad auto video telling a supervisor variously that he didn't know where Castile's gun was, then that he told Castile to get his hand off it. Yanez testified Friday that he meant that he didn't know where the gun was "up until I saw it in his right thigh area".

In that Facebook video, Castile - bleeding heavily - insists that he hadn't been reaching for his gun, which he had a permit to carry.

Defense Attorney Paul Engh leaves the Ramsey County Courthouse after presenting closing arguments in the case of Jeronimo Yanez in St. Paul, Minn. on Monday, June 12, 2017.

Jury deliberations will continue Tuesday at 9 a.m.

She condemned the killings of black men by police officers that have happened nationwide and said she prays that the jury will find Yanez guilty on all counts. They also argued that Castile had smoked marijuana before the traffic stop and was stoned, which influenced his actions.

The finger was injured during the incident and Paulsen explained to jurors that the photo is additional evidence that Castile's trigger finger could have not been in his pocket or on the gun when he was shot. He also cited testimony from first responders who saw Castile's gun in his pocket as he was loaded onto a backboard.

Gray told the jury they "could reasonably infer" that Castile sat in his auto and smoked marijuana while Diamond Reynolds, her sister and daughter went inside Cub Foods prior to the shooting.

The Minnesota officer facing manslaughter charges for fatally shooting Philando Castile claimed he "had no choice" when he testified to jurors Friday. "And now they've been deprived of that role model". Yanez fired seven shots, hitting Castile five times, including twice in the heart, prosecutors said. During the trial, Reynolds said she and Castile had used marijuana, and a subsequent autopsy found traces of the drug in his blood. The two sides called competing experts earlier who disagreed over whether Castile was intoxicated.

"We all know this is a sad case".

After three white alternates were dismissed after closing arguments, the 12-member jury included two black and ten white people. "He had no complaints", prosecutor Jeffrey Paulsen said at officer Jeronimo Yanez's manslaughter trial.

Toward the conclusion of his closing argument, Gray told jurors that if they take in all the facts of the case they'll see that the state "failed miserably".

Now, a jury must decide whether Yanez should be convicted of three charges against him: one count of second-degree manslaughter for the death of Castile, and two counts of "intentional discharge of firearm that endangers safety" for shooting into a vehicle with Reynolds and her daughter inside. Gray said prosecutors were taking the statements out of context.
