DACA to Remain in Effect, DAPA Rescinded by Trump Administration

Trump Administration Ends Program Protecting Undocumented Immigrant Parents From Deportation

The protection program for parents, like the one for young immigrants, was created with a policy memo, not by legislation. He called the program which protected the youth - Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) - unconstitutional. Some had feared applying for the program, or renewing their status, because of President Donald Trump's campaign pledge to "immediately terminate" it.

Trump made his feelings on then-President Barack Obama's immigration efforts very clear while he was running for office. "Instead of deporting as numerous 11 million undocumented immigrants as possible and breaking apart millions of families, we should change the law to deal fairly with those people who are here now with longstanding ties to our country".

The Trump administration has continued to accept and approve applications for the program.

"The future of the DACA program continues to be under review with the administration", said Jenny Burke, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security. According to the Pew Research Center, some 1.1 million undocumented immigrants are eligible for the DACA protection and more than 750,000 have used the program to file for work permits and deportation relief.

The decision to continue the DACA program, which impacts about 800,000 people in the United States, came as the administration formally ended Mr. Obama's attempt to expand it to also cover the parents of the Dreamers. DAPA, or the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, was implemented by executive action in November 2014.

Many DACA participants arrived in the United States as small children and have little recollection of their birth countries.

And he is dismissing as "a load of nonsense" the idea that Russian Federation has damaging information on President Donald Trump . He, however, suggested that private Russian hacker with "patriotic leanings" could have been involved.

DAPA would have affected as many as four million people by some estimates, those with US-born children who were in the country before 2010. They would have been kept safe from deportation and provided with renewable work permits.

The rescinded 2014 memo would have granted work permits and reprieves from deportation to 4 million parents of USA citizens and green card holders, provided that they passed a criminal background check and met other requirements.

Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents, the program to protect immigrant parents that was canceled on Thursday, was derailed last June, when the supreme court issued a split decision leaving in place a lower court ruling that blocked the program.

In order to be eligible for DACA, young people have to have entered the USA before age 16 and still been under the age of 31 as of June 15, 2012, the day that President Obama announced the creation of the program. Immigration advocates also condemned DHS' rejection Thursday of a proposal that would've expended DACA to include new recipients. Arrests of immigrants inside the US have increased under the Trump administration, but deportations are slightly down as fewer people have been caught crossing the Mexican border into the United States illegally.

The "Dreamers", undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S.as children, have been on edge since Trump's election.
