US Open 2017: Who failed to make the cut at Erin Hills?

Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day - the top three players in the world, all of them professing expansive Erin Hills to be ideal for their games - spent Friday cleaning out their lockers after missing the cut.

World number two Rory McIlroy, who has been sidelined for a month with rib and back injuries, followed his opening round 78 with a one-under 71, courtesy of four birdies over his final six holes.

It's easy when you're firing at flagsticks and the hole looks as big as a bucket, as it did on Thursday morning for Rickie Fowler, when he tied a U.S. Open record in relation to par by opening with a 7-under 65 at Erin Hills.

With the cut on another low-scoring day coming at one over, Johnson seemed poised to scrape into the weekend after three birdies and a bogey left him at two under, one over outright, midway through his second round.

After tying for a distant second at the 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, Fowler missed the cut in his last two U.S. Open starts.

With a host of high-profile stars, including the top three in the world rankings, having missed the cut, the top 18 at the end of round two was made up entirely of players still seeking their first major.

Co-leaders Paul Casey (71), Brian Harman, Tommy Fleetwood and Brooks Koepka (all 70) are at seven-under.

"In my good seasons, yes, but there have been times when I struggled, but had I taken the 8 14 years ago I probably would not have managed to get back like I did today", he said. This week marked his seventh U.S. Open; he'd never missed a cut, and counts five top-10 finishes.

Garry Monk unveiled at Middlesbrough and reveals why he wanted the job
If a big club in the Premier League knocks it might be a different story, the club is so realistic also. An announcement on Monk's backroom staff is set to be made later in the week.

Shane Lowry is the only Irish golfer now inside the projected cut mark of 1-over at the US Open as Day 2 unfolds. He went from pouring putts into the center of the cup to burning the edges, and his 39 on the back nine cost him the lead, though not his chances of breaking through for that first major.

"It's pretty frustrating", said Day, still smiling after missing the cut at the American championship. The next one went long, he chipped up to 12 feet and took two putts from there. "And I had a good time". I'm looking forward to it very much. Reavie birdied five of his first seven holes, and eight in all Friday, to surge back into contention.

"With where I was hitting it", he said with a smile, "I wasn't in the way".

Casey nearly watched his U.S. Open hopes sink with a triple-bogey eight on the par-five 14th hole, and a bogey on the next that dropped him to two under for the tournament. "It's a major, it means a lot to me", Johnson said.

On the golf course, there was only a barrage of birdies.

Johnson, who arrived late at Erin Hills following the birth of his second child on Monday, will now have extra time to spend with his infant son after returning a 73 for four-over.

The U.S. Open is hailed as the most hard tournament in golf.

One shot back. Jamie Lovemark. 16 (getting an awkward bunker shot up and down) and 17 (where he cooked his second from the rough over the green) just to make some pars and give himself some momentum to hold onto heading into the weekend.
