Admin revokes blocked program to protect immigrant parents

Fate of program to protect young immigrants still undecided

The announcement that DACA in its current form will remain in effect came at the bottom of a press release about the administration's decision to rescind a 2014 directive that would have extended DACA-like protections to undocumented parents of US citizens or lawful permanent residents.

Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly made the decision announced Thursday after consulting with Attorney General Jeff Sessions "because there is no credible path forward to litigate the now enjoined policy", according to a statement from the department. Both parents under the plan had to fulfill certain criteria. When Obama rolled out the program, it drew praise from some educators and immigration advocates and criticism from Republicans in Congress who say the president overstepped his authority. A federal court agreed and blocked the administration from enforcing the policy. Trump said Obama's actions had "defied federal law and the Constitution". What's more, this move under the Trump administration came on the fifth anniversary of DAPA's sister policy, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).

But since winning election, the president has softened his stance on those brought to the U.S.as children, dubbed by supporters as "Dreamers" after a failed legislative proposal that would have provided them a path to permanent legal residency. On February 16, Trump said that his administration would "deal with DACA with heart".

The same night, however, the administration canceled a never-enacted policy that would protect undocumented parents of USA citizens from deportation. Arrests of immigrants inside the USA have increased under the Trump administration, but deportations are slightly down because fewer people have been caught crossing the Mexican border into the United States illegally.

Vice President Mike Pence hires outside counsel in Russia probe
His decision to hire Cullen seems wise, as this investigation shows no signs of losing steam anytime soon. Cullen also served as the attorney general of Virginia and as a USA attorney under President George H.W.

The announcement marks yet another departure for Trump from his campaign rhetoric. On the short list of good things President Trump has done, this relief provided to young, hard-working immigrants is first and foremost. The government, he said, was "not [going] after the 'dreamers, ' we are after the criminals".

Migrants known as Dreamers "who were issued three-year extensions before the district court's injunction will not be affected, and will be eligible to seek a two-year extension upon their expiration", said guidance released Thursday.

While President Obama had pushed in many reforms for immigrants, a record number of 2 million deportations were executed during his administration.
