However, the total number seeking safety across worldwide borders as refugees topped 22.5 million, the highest number seen since UNHCR was founded in 1950.

At the end of 2016, there were some 40.3 million IDPs in the world, down slightly from 40.8 million a year earlier, with Syria, Iraq and Colombia accounting for the greatest numbers.

"But, Lebanon, another one of the neighboring countries, is the country that has the highest per capita ratio compared to the local population in terms of the number of refugees".

About two-thirds of the newly displaced people fled somewhere else in their own country.

"The world seems to have become unable to make peace", Grandi said. It found an average of 20 people were driven out from their homes every minute a year ago, the refugee agency said.

Canada is contributing another $86 million to assist starvation and war ravaged South Sudan, International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau announced today.

Almost two-thirds of this total are people who have been forcibly displaced within their own country.

The information is contained in the UNHCR's latest Global Trends report which is a survey of the state of displacement internationally.

- Unaccompanied or separated children - mainly Afghans and Syrians - lodged some 75,000 applications in 70 countries in 2016.

Among the refugees, asylum seekers - people who have fled their country and are seeking worldwide protection - totaled 2.8 million by the end of 2016.

The number of people forced to flee has increased with more than 50% over the last five years, up from 42.3 million in 2012. He called the figures a failure of diplomacy, reports BBC News.

In total, about 3.3 million South Sudanese had fled their homes by the end of the year, in what is known as the fastest-growing displacement of people in the world.

Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, said the number of displaced people was unacceptable.

The UN refugee chief meanwhile voiced most alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation in South Sudan, which he said was now the world's "fastest growing refugee crisis and displacement crisis".

According to the report, 84 percent of the world's 22.5 million refugees were in low or middle income countries, with a third in the world's least developed nations.

By sheer numbers, Turkey hosts the largest number of refugees (2.9 million) followed by Pakistan (1.4 mln) and Lebanon (1 mln).

- Some 189,300 refugees were accepted for resettlement by 37 countries.

86% of the worlds Refugees are hosted by developing countries.

The UNHCR said the largest recipient of new asylum applications was Germany with more than 722,400 registered previous year.

Over 5.5 million people face severe food insecurity, with an estimated 100,000 of them facing starvation, according to United Nations estimates.

And almost 70 years after Palestinians first fled today's Israel, some 5.3 million Palestinians are now living as refugees - the highest level ever recorded, UNHCR said.
