A ballgame of unity, spirit, friendly rivalry, won by Dems

House Whip Steve Scalise shot during congressional baseball practice; gunman dead

The Democratic and Republican congressional baseball teams proceeded with their annual game to benefit charity Thursday night under the lights at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., only 36 hours after a shooter unleashed gunfire at a GOP team practice.

"He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding", the statement said.

A congressional women's softball team has hit the practice field in Washington amid heavier security, a day after an attacker opened fire on Republican lawmakers practicing for a charity baseball game. Scalise was reported to have been tended to by Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, a US Army Reserve doctor who served in Iraq, before his treatment at the hospital.

Trump and First Lady Melania visited Scalise's family - as well as that of wounded officer Crystal Griner, who is also at MedStar Hospital- last night.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear but authorities were zeroing in on the life of James T. Hodgkinson, a 66-year-old man from IL, in the months and weeks before Wednesday morning's shooting. His social media contained anti-Trump and anti-Republican posts.

"I had no idea this was going to happen and I don't know what to say about it". The doctor described how a bullet from an assault rifle entered Scalise's hip and traversed his pelvis, shattering blood vessels, bones and internal organs along the way.

President Donald Trump, who visited Scalise Wednesday night at the Washington hospital where he remains in critical condition, didn't attend, but recorded a video message played before the game.

Republicans won the game last year, ending a seven-year winning streak for Democrats. He was one of five people wounded Wednesday in an attack on a Republican team practice in Virginia. The full episode featuring his interview with Mark Levin will air on CRTV Thursday evening at 9:00 pm ET and is available on demand for CRTV subscribers.

The Democrats defeated the Republicans 11-2. "From everything we've known in our interactions with him, he never tipped off and gave any indication that he was violent in any way".

Former New York Yankees manager Joe Torre presented the game ball to Capitol Police special agent David Bailey, who came out on the field on crutches after being injured in Wednesday's shooting, to throw out the first pitch to huge applause.

Rep. Mo Brooks, an Alabama Republican, said two law enforcement officers were believed to be among the others shot.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Congressman Steve Scalise today", LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri said before the team left for Omaha.

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana speaks March 8, 2017, on Capitol Hill in Washington.

"In Washington we have our disagreements, but we all agree that we are here to serve this nation we love and the people who call it home", Trump said.

The running tally of results has Republicans and Democrats both at 39 wins, 39 losses and one tie.

The 66-year-old suspect from Belleville, Illinois, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign but whether he was politically motivated is still unclear, investigators said.
