Thousands attend slain Muslim teen's funeral in Virginia

A SC man has been taken into custody in connection with setting fire to 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen's Washington, D.C., memorial in Dupont Circle.

Detectives told Nabra's mother that the teenager was struck with a metal bat, The Washington Post reported.

Joshua Salaam, chaplain at the ADAMS Center, told a press conference Tuesday that the mosque has faith in the police investigation.

Egypt's Al-Azhar denounced on Tuesday the murder of an American Muslim girl of Egyptian descent in a suspected hate crime in the U.S. state of Virginia. A pond where the body of a teenage Muslim girl was found is shown on Monday, June 19, 2017, in Sterling, Va.

At the same time, he said there are people in the Muslim community who are less concerned with the legalities of what constitutes a hate crime and have a more visceral reaction.

"She is the age of my daughter", 44-year-old Springfield, Virginia resident Hela Elgengy said, holding back tears.

Her body was found about 11 hours later in a man-made pond in Loudoun County. "And it wasn't just Muslim youth" but the broader Reston community that she was connected to, he said.

He said Nabra fell down as her friends got away before the alleged beating.

On Tuesday, Muslim groups throughout the US held vigils in the teen's honor, The Associated Press reported.

Fairfax County Police said they don't have any evidence that points to a hate crime.

The memorial erected for Nabra Hassanen, the 17-year-old Muslim girl who was murdered earlier this week, was set on fire Wednesday morning.

But I can honestly say my motivation was always what I believed to be in the best interest of the Irish people", he said. Varadkar's policies are primarily viewed as centre-right based on his socio-economic views.

Dranesville Road, which was largely empty when an attacker beat Nabra there on early Sunday morning, was packed with people walking along the same sidewalk to attend her funeral.

Torres was later arrested and has been charged with murder. Nabra's death means that all of us now have a diminished sense of safety; we all grieve with Nabra's parents, who lost their handsome and beloved daughter during Ramadan, on Father's Day.

Martinez Torres and a teen on a bicycle got into a dispute and Martinez drove his auto up on the curb, scattering the teens, police said.

The public defender's office, which was appointed to represent Martinez Torres, declined to comment.

Ezickson said Tuesday that his organization is monitoring the investigation and has "every confidence in law enforcement to determine what happened to Nabra and whether the circumstances of her death merit a hate crimes charge".

Martinez Torres, a citizen of El Salvador, is being held without bail on a murder charge.

"If nobody gave you a compliment, she gave you a compliment", he said.

Officials said the group had stopped at a McDonald's between Ramadan prayers. "I don't care what the police say", he said, explaining that his daughter was specifically targeted because of her religion.

Associated Press writers Matt Barakat in Fairfax, Virginia; and Ben Nuckols and Luis Alonso Lugo in Sterling, Virginia; contributed to this report.

Hurunnessa Fariad, media representative for the ADAMS Center, said people are still trying to wrap their heads around what happened, and counselors are being made available for anyone who needs emotional support.

"We know this is an incredibly hard time, especially for our Muslim community", FCPD said in the release.
