TCU to meet Florida again after 9-2 College World Series win

TCU players and coaches meet patients

Wade, Humphreys and Skoug combined for five hits, three runs and seven RBIs, leading TCU to a 9-2 victory and forcing a Saturday rematch against the Gators, with a trip to the Finals on the line.

"Certainly felt good about the way Mitchell started the game for us and Jackson on their side was beyond unbelievable", TCU head coach Jim Schlossnagle said. "So I think now that we're so close again, we know what it feels like to be in the final four and get kicked out".

TCU also got a solid game from its pitching staff. Starter Mitchell Traver almost matched Kowar at the outset, striking out five of the first seven batters he faced.

TCU started the season at No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and have stayed in the top 10 all season.

The Horned Frogs (50-17) led 2-0 in the third after Ryan Merrill's single and back-to-back doubles by Austen Wade and Zach Humphreys. He walked Mike Rivera to load the bases before he struck out Nick Horvath looking to end the threat.

Rivera homered and Dalton Guthrie drove in a run with a double as UF tied the game in the bottom of the third.

"We know we're going to face a team that's not only talented, but they're hot", TCU coach Jim Schlossnagle said.

Horned Frog pitcher Sean Wymer came into the game in the fifth inning with TCU holding the 4-3 lead. Florida knocked Traver out in the fourth but was unable to get to the TCU bullpen.

The Cardinals used a five-run inning to prevail against the Aggies in their first game.

Jackson Kowar (12-1, 5 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 11 K) suffered his first loss of the season.

Evan Skoug's three-run double capped a four-run sixth inning that put TCU ahead, 8-2. Skoug made up for lost time with a 3 RBI double that would get the score to 8-2. TCU crossed two more runners in the top of the next frame to bring the score to 4-2, and suddenly panic set in among the Gators' dugout.

TCU has allowed fewer than three earned runs in eighth straight games. "When he fouled those two balls into the seats on the third base side, those are the best swings he's taken in a couple of weeks, even the home runs he's hit in the regional, super regional", Schlossnagle said. We just need to play better.

TCU has never been to the finals, and for both teams, it would mean a shot at their first national championship.

Wymer (6-4), who worked the last 4 1/3 innings, has thrown nine shutout innings over his last four appearances.

Alex Faedo, who has been dominant in recent starts, will pitch for Florida.

Cards fight back thanks in large part to solo home runs by Brendan McKay and Logan Taylor.

"He put together an outstanding effort against us", Skoug said.

"If you told me we had one game to win and you've got Faedo on the mound and Dyson, who's emerged, and Byrne fresh, I'll take my chances", Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan said.

Junior right-hander Alex Faedo, a first-round Major League Baseball draft pick this summer, struck out 11 over seven innings in a 3-0 win against TCU on Sunday. "Obviously we've got our number one going". "I don't want another bad day in Omaha because you have to say goodbye to Brian Howard and Mitchell Traver, and that's the worst thing ever".

The night looked incredible early for Florida starter Jackson Kowar.
