FIFA Confederations Cup: Portugal, Mexico through to semi-final

Portugal striker Christiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for the European champions with a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

The New Zealand side maintained 2-0 trashing status quo till 80th minute when Andre Silva scored the third goal and Luis Carlos, popularly known as' Nani' crowned the goals in the first minute of extra time.

It was a typically efficient performance from Portugal who never looked in real danger despite a sluggish start.

Just before half-time, Portugal forward Andre Silva lashed out at Michael Boxall after a tussle with the New Zealand defender, which left him with a torn shirt - but could easily have also resulted in a red card.

New Zealand goalkeeper Stefan Marinovic, who helped Unterhaching win promotion from the German fourth division last season, kept the score down with a superb second-half display.

Portugal dominated all aspects of play early on Sunday (AEST), firing in 22 attempts on goal with 12 on target and earning 12 corners to New Zealand's one.

New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson called it "an incredible sign of respect" to see the strong Portugal lineup on arriving at the stadium.

Portugal finish top of Group A on goal difference ahead of Mexico, which also advanced by beating host Russian Federation 2-1 in Kazan.

TCU to meet Florida again after 9-2 College World Series win
Starter Mitchell Traver almost matched Kowar at the outset, striking out five of the first seven batters he faced. TCU has never been to the finals, and for both teams, it would mean a shot at their first national championship .

Ronaldo was presented with a great chance in the 24th minute when he attempted to convert a cross into a goal, but his promising header from near the penalty spot low towards the middle of the net was saved. They expected three or possibly four points from Group A and they ended up with three, with a goal difference of three goals in favor and three against.

Hosts Russia have been knocked out by Mexico in the FIFA Confederations Cup, after going down 1-2 in the last group match played today.

Akinfeev made a mistake that led to Mexico's second goal after a long clearance by Herrera from near the Mexican area.

And things won't get any easier for the South American champions when they face Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal in the semifinals.

Hosts Russia took a deserved 25th-minute lead through Aleksandr Samedov, but Nestor Araujo equalised for Mexico with a looping header on the half hour.

Mexico rallied for a 2-1 victory over the tournament hosts in Kazan on Saturday to go through to the semifinals alongside group winners Portugal.

Mexico had a second-half goal by defender Hector Moreno disallowed for offside after video review. The defender headed the ball into the opposite corner, over Akinfeev.

The Video Assistant Review (VAR) system denied Mexico a third when Hector Moreno was correctly ruled to be offside but, after Yuri Zhirkov was dismissed, El Tri held on to stay in the tournament and knock Russian Federation out.
