China releases Liu Xiaobo from prison after cancer diagnosis

Liu Xiaobo, Jailed Chinese Nobel Laureate, Is Moved From Prison for Cancer Treatment

Nobel Peace Prize-winning activist Liu Xiaobo's liver cancer cannot be treated with surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy, Liu's wife said, as questions increased among his supporters over his treatment by the Chinese authorities.

China has criticised calls for Liu's release as "irresponsible" and interference in its internal affairs.

He has no special plans.

The Nobel committee described him as "the foremost symbol" of the human rights struggle in China.

In 2009 he was sentenced to 11 years in jail for engaging in activities created to overthrow the government.

Liu, who has been under house arrest in Beijing, could not be reached for comment on the video, but a close friend, Ye Du, who was among the first to upload the footage, confirmed it was authentic.

Despite China's refusal to let Liu or a representative travel to accept the award, the Nobel ceremony organizers placed his citation and medal on an empty chair in a poignant event held in December 2010 in Oslo.

One of his lawyers, Shang Baojun, has said the outlook for Liu appeared grim.

Swedish government announces release of hostage in Mali
According to Swedish media reports, Gift of the Givers had been negotiating a ransom with the hostage-takers. Rijke was freed in April 2015 by French special forces.

The Nobel laureate is also known for his efforts in attempting to negotiate a safe exit of thousands of student demonstrators from Tiananmen Square on the night of June 3, 1989.

In Hong Kong, about 70 supporters of Liu took to the streets to demand his immediate release, chanting slogans denouncing the Chinese government as a "murderer". UNPO, together with other organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, urges the Chinese authorities to entirely release Liu Xiaobo and his wife Liu Xia, under unlawful house arrest since 2010, to allow them to reunite and to seek proper healthcare for Mr Liu's cancer either inside or outside China.

Hu Jia, a fellow activist, said that the family wanted Liu to be treated in Beijing, where hospitals are better, or overseas, but that Chinese authorities had other plans, possibly fearing unrest ahead of big political meetings scheduled for the fall. "He will still be tightly controlled by the Chinese Communist Party as his wife has been for so many years", Chen Guangcheng said.

Through Mo Shaoping, one of Liu's lawyers, the South China Morning Post has learned that the famous dissident's brother, Liu Xiaoxuan, has said that his 61-year-old brother was diagnosed with "terminal liver cancer" back on May 23rd.

An emotional Liu says in the 10-second video circulated on Twitter: "No surgery". She suffered a heart attack in 2014, when she was diagnosed with depression after years of detention, a rights group said at the time.

Liu Xiaobo was jailed in 2009 for "inciting subversion of state power" after he helped write a petition known as Charter 08, calling for sweeping political reforms in China.

He was arrested in 1991 for Tiananmen-related activity but released without charges. The medical team said they will attempt to treat him with targeted therapy, which uses drugs to stop the growth and spread of the cancer, according to friends.

Liu was not allowed to attend his father-in-law's funeral last year and his mother-in-law's funeral this year, said the source who asked not to be identified.
