Pres. Trump Grants Afghan Girls Robotics Team Visas

In Reversal Afghan Girls Get US Visas To Attend Robotics Competition

Joining a chorus of those who welcomed the reversal, his daughter Ivanka posted on Twitter "I look forward to welcoming this brilliant team of Afghan girls, and their competitors, to Washington DC next week!"

This is a temporary status given to a person who is otherwise ineligible to travel to a country, allowing them entry for an emergency, humanitarian goal or public interest.

A U.S. travel ban is in place for people travelling from six majority-Muslim countries.

U.S.is holding the FIRST Global Challange "Robot Building competition", a robotics competition and an opportunity for high school students worldwide to develop their skill in robot making.

The incident led to a lot of criticism towards the U.S. authorities for creating more obstacles for the Afghan team who are already struggling in war-torn Afghanistan where Taliban once banned girls from even going to school.

"When we heard that we were rejected we lost hope", 14-year-old Sumaya Farooqi told the Associated Press earlier this week.

The cloud server was owned and operated by telephonic software and data firm NICE Systems , a third-party vendor for Verizon . Verizon later confirmed the security breach, saying that it it was due to "human error" associated with a cloud server.

After six months of hard work - often working seven days a week on the project - they constructed a ball sorting robot that can move objects to their correct places.

The girls wrote on their competition page: "We want to make a difference, and most breakthroughs in science, technology and other industries normally start with the dream of a child to do something great". They made the 800-kilometer (500-mile) trek to the United States embassy in Kabul twice after their first applications were denied.

"Of the 163 applicants, of 157 countries, have obtained their visas to the United States, including those from Iran, Sudan, and the team of the syrian refugees", said Mr. Sestak: "I could not be more proud".

While their robot was sent overseas to compete and arrangements were made for them to video-conference in to the event, the team of girls from Western Afghanistan were rejected twice for the necessary visas to attend in-person.

The girls, all high schoolers, had constructed a ball-sorting robot to enter in the First Global Challenge, an worldwide robotics contest that aims to promote interest in science, technology, engineering and math.

"Afghanistan is a country at war and doesn't have a lot of resources at hand", team member Fatima Qadari said.
