China calls for halt to THAAD deployment

But Russia and China are opposed to the show of strength by the US and South Korea.

Four more rocket launchers for a USA missile defense system were soon to be deployed here Thursday after police removed hundreds of protesters from the site.

Trump has offered "conceptual approval" on the purchase of billions of dollars' worth of US military weapons and equipment by South Korea.

Ahead of the meeting with Mr Putin, he said the situation could get out of hand if North Korea's missile and nuclear tests are not stopped.

The Ministry of National Defense said the U.S. Forces Korea will dispatch the four Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, launchers at a facility in the southeastern rural village of Seongju, some 300km away from the capital. Beijing opposed the us missile defense system in South Korea and called it a "stab wound".

The deployment would follow a spate of recent North Korean ballistic missile and nuclear tests, and increasingly heated rhetoric between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday said the USA will answer any threat from the North with a "massive military response".

On Sunday, North Korea carried out its sixth and most powerful nuclear test in further defiance against global pressure over its nuclear and missile programs.

Two truck-mounted THAAD launchers and a powerful radar are already in operation at a former golf course in Seongju.

The United States is considering, in addition to other options, stopping all trade with any country doing business with North Korea.

He said it was important that all parties, including North Korea, should not face "threats of annihilation" and "step on the path of cooperation".

South Korean President Moon Jae-in has told Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United Nations Security Council should seriously review cutting off oil supplies to North Korea. He said it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement".
