Uber loses licence to operate in London

Uber petition 500,000 people have signed

Bradford council is "continuing to monitor" controversial online private hire firm Uber after the company lost its licence to operate in London.

London's local regulator, Transport for London's (TfL) decision to revoke Uber's private hire operator license sent shockwaves among the residents of the city yesterday.

Cab drivers say Uber drivers don't have to comply with the same licensing standards, giving the ride-hailing service an unfair advantage and placing the public at risk.

These include its approach to reporting serious criminal offences, and to obtaining criminal record checks for drivers.

The company's current licence expires on September 30. It can operate until it has exhausted all appeals.

First, the rift shows contradictions between cheaper ride-hailing service and traditional black-cab operations in London. "It is more efficient, safer and economical than the alternatives".

"We expect Uber will again embark on a spurious legal challenge against the mayor and TfL, and we will urge the court to uphold this decision".

The ubiquitous vehicle share service has experienced explosive growth in dense and sprawling London, where an estimated 40,000 Uber drivers prowl the streets waiting for a click from the 3.5 million residents who have downloaded the app.

Mauricio Pochettino has revealed what his favourite Harry Kane goal is
Tottenham should have had a penalty late on in the second half, when Aurier was tripped by Jordan Ayew . "I think if you went around the group it would surprise you how many of our players have been there".

The company claimed that the regulator had caved into a "small number of people" who want to restrict consumer choice, in an apparent reference to the campaign by the existing black cab market.

The mayor acknowledged the popularity of Uber in the capital but said "it would be wrong for TfL to license Uber if there was any way this could pose a threat to Londoners' safety or security".

The petition will be delivered to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, according to the fine print at the end. The company says it has 3.5 million customers in the capital and almost 550,000 had signed up by Saturday afternoon.

London joins other cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, and Cape Town in not granting a licence and the decision adds to woes for Uber's new boss Dara Khosrowshahi following a string of controversies.

Khosrowshahi also pleaded London to work with Uber to "make things right".

Post-Kalanick woesThe loss of the San Francisco-based start-up's licence comes after a tumultuous few months that led to former CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick being forced out.

The company has already been forced to leave several countries, including Denmark and Hungary, and has faced regulatory battles in multiple U.S. states and countries around the world.

Ross, who acknowledged that the Uber issue is not one he is responsible for, nonetheless criticized European authorities for unfairly targeting American technology firms.
