Hurricane Maria headed for Puerto Rico after hitting Dominica

Hurricane Maria forecast to become Category 4 storm

The Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica reported a widespread loss of communication on the island, and relatives of students posted messages on its Facebook page saying they had been unable to talk to their loved ones since late Monday evening as the storm approached.

Britain's International Development Secretary Priti Patel is touring the area to see the damage caused by Hurricane Maria and Irma.

His voice broke and he wiped tears from his eyes as he described a country in which no household - regardless of income level - was left untouched by the punishing winds and deluge of water brought to the island as the eye of Maria passed directly over the island on Monday night.

Skerrit said it was a "miracle" more people did not die given the "unprecedented destruction". This is said to be King's Lane.

The Prime Minister said with recovery now underway, he had declared a state of emergency and a curfew from 4 p.m.to 8 a.m. daily. He and family are fine.

Of those 206 Canadians, 196 are trapped on the island of Dominica, including 148 students from Ross University School of Medicine. The PM also said on Thursday that the island's main hospital was still without power. Patient care has been compromised.

Urgent helicopter services are needed to take food, water and tarpaulins to outer districts for shelter. The housing stock significantly damaged or destroyed. That figure, the Prime Minister fears, will rise as he wades his way into the rural communities today, Wednesday.

The biased referendum for an independent Kurdistan in Iraq
Numerous actions took place just as Washington issued a September 15 statement declaring its opposition to the referendum. He warned the Kurdistan region would encounter economic and political hardships if it voted "Yes" in the referendum.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Dr. Keith Rowley announced that all immigration restrictions typically imposed on Dominican citizens will be waived for the next six months - on the condition they can find accommodation on Trinidad and Tobago.

"In summary, the island has been devastated". All available public buildings are being used as shelters; with very limited roofing materials evident. "Let us continue to pray for our safety". Will update further as new information is received.

"There were no classes in regard to the hurricane", he said.

In fact, the entire Hurricane Maria experience has been somewhat of a blur, with the Dominican community as a whole seemingly "shocked" and left to wonder, "how a hurricane can come from a category one or no category at all to reach category five in a day".

"Dominica had very little time to prepare for this monster", Karins added.

Maria ties for the eighth strongest storm in Atlantic history, when measured by wind speed.
